Sorry, I'm going on record as saying I think this is a not very nice joke.

What if we happen to have members of Asian descent on the board?

Respect your opinion, Jimbo.

And like the OP personally.

Just can't feel I can keep quiet. If several others think it's funny

and a good laugh, so be it.

I agree jimbo. I'm half Irish and there are a brazillian Irish jokes out there! :wah:

Oh no....wait....that was the Brazillian joke....

I now know a total of 2 Jewish jokes and a handful of black ones.

How do you stop a black kid from jumping on the bed?

Stick velcro on the ceiling.

What did the Irishman win on The Generation Game?

A conveyor belt and a pair of sliding doors!

Okay, the races are all even now! ;)

You are just making it a whole lot worse. I've known many, many jokes

like that I would NEVER repeat. That's just awful, I think. What if

Lennox comes back here and sees that? And I'm not quoting them,

they don't deserve to be.

it's perfectly appropriate for a black person to make jokes about blacks.

it's perfectly appropriate for a chinese person to make jokes about chinese.

when one race makes jokes about races other than their own, it's not appropriate. that's my stance. it's the same with making jokes at one's own expense, or making jokes at other's expense. if i'm obese, and i make jokes about my own obesity, that's okay. if some asshat points at a fat person and makes a joke at their expense, that's wrong. there is a substantive difference between laughing at oneself, and laughing at others who are different from oneself.

here's a little stereotype for you - i find the brits here on forumgarden seem far more likely to post these sorts of racist jokes than the american participants. i think racism is tolerated a lot more in britain. i think that, simply by the example here on forumgarden. there have been several instances in the past where brit members posted these patently offensive, racist jokes. therefore, i can come to the conclusion that brits are more racist than americans.

just as i can come to the conclusion that one can stop a black kid from jumping on the bed by putting velcro on the ceiling.

GB is barely the size of one of the US states. saying that you've lived in 'the states' is about as informative as saying 'i lived on a continent'.

if you lived two years in rural vermont, yeah, you'd probably never run into even a single black person. if you lived in new york city, you'd likely have seen a huge amount of racial mixing.

the reason we can make jokes like this together is we are all equal here and friends

really? so, say you walk into a bar you've never been in to before. there are white and black patrons. you announce in general that you heard a funny joke - that you can keep a black kid from jumping on the bed by putting velcro on the ceiling. you're saying the black patrons who don't know you would find it a droll bit of fun? i don't think so.

i'll repeat. making jokes at one's own expense is fine. making jokes at other people's expense is wrong.

actually, here's a better throw at it. feel free to walk into a muslim neighborhood and make a joke about allah. report back the results, if you're able.

Dearest Jimbo, all races mix together here. They all sit together in my class, they walk the same streets together, live next to each, and are good friends. But we are respectful of their ethnicity, and I know I do not tolerate any negative remarks about race, gender, religion, etc. in my classroom. And there is none, because we care for each other.

The city I live in is very integrated, and everyone goes and mingles together in all the usual watering holes. But respect brings respect. Val's remark about Lennox, and how he would feel if he saw the "jokes", would make him very sad.

The joke's foundation is the curious inability of an immigrant to recognise and pronounce words in English accurately. It's a worldwide attribute of people learning a new language that they get into such a fix.

When I was a lad one of my teachers performed a running joke, standing up several times throughout an evening's school concert and calling out "close the curtains, the viper's coming", the denouement being the arrival at the end of the concert of a second teacher dressed in working clothes and a cloth cap, carrying a bucket and ladder, declaring himself to be the the vindow viper. Jewish immigration from Middle Europe was at its high point and we all thought it was remarkably witty stuff.

Playground jokes relied on similar punning themes - the Chinese having so few telephones because, there being so many Wings and Wongs in China, they'd all be winging the wong number, for example. Rastus jokes were popular because dey gave de opportunity to 'speriment wid de nachural intonations of de blacks in Alabama, not because Rastus was stupid or inferior. On the contrary, Rastus always came out on top in the jokes, being a wily chap.

To water the term "racist" by applying it to sound-jokes is to demean the genuine disadvantage these immigrant and discriminated communities faced. Literacy tests, poll taxes and the Klan, Moseley's Blackshirt fascists, landlords advertising "no blacks or Irish", the Exclusion Act (which denied entry into the USA of the insane, criminals, paupers and the Chinese) were racist.

Jokes based on speech patterns don't come close to institutional discrimination. They're not disabling, they're observational. It's one thing to say that recruiting practices must be blind to ethnicity, it's quite another to say that individuals must be as well.

He was flying from where he lived (an outback opal mining town called Coober Pedy) to Adelaide, the state capital, about three hours in a single engine aircraft. There was a random safety check by the air traffic control people who radioed George and asked him if he had a safety beacon on board. George couldn't quite understand what he was being asked and radioed back, "We got eggs and we got salami but we got no bacon". Apparently the air traffic control blokes were in fits when they worked it out. George used to love tellng that story.

yep. and that supports my position on it. in repeating the story, he was having a laugh at his own expense. not someone else's.

and since i've been subjected to one of spot's posts against my will, i'll point out that it doesn't have a damned thing to do with racism, as he so appropriately misconstrues, it has to do with kindness and decency. so i'll say it again: there is a substantive difference between laughing at oneself, and laughing at others who are different from oneself.

my contention is that such jokes result from ignorance, and insensitivity. such jokes merely reinforce stereotypes, which most certainly don't bring people together, they serve to create greater separation.

i'm by no means suggesting that i'm some sort of perfectly pure-of-heart person who has never made an inappropriate or insensitive joke. by no means at all. but all it takes is time spent with someone hurt by such a joke to realize that they aren't some sort of abstract 'celebration' of our differences. i've made jokes, or said derisive things about obese people. having grown up in the 1960 in white, middle-class, suburbia, there were extremely few obese people then. but the one or two whom i knew were tormented relentlessly for their difference, with lasting emotional consequences. and in tha bizarro world of children, even i suffered some derision for being different - for being smarter than my peers. well-meaning but misguided educators back then put me, and a handful of other children, into a program called "Mentally Gifted Minors", and once a week we got to spend part of a day at a separate school facility, being given advanced, particularly interesting instruction. oh how lovely to be back on the playground afterwards. the other kids were made to feel inferior to us, unwittingly. and they let us know how displeased they were with it.

our differences are a wonderful thing, it'd be an awfully boring place if we were all the same. making jokes at other's expense because they are different from you is not the way to celebrate that difference.

this is way too long. sorry.

Helefra, I found that joke pretty darned funny.

I guess that makes me an uncultured racist hillbilly honky, huh?

Some jokes (I had an example but won't put it here after all) are not funny because they're patently mean. Some of you obviously feel that way about this joke. But not everybody does and they are equally entitled to laugh as you are to shudder. So how about we stop slapping everybody else's wrists with the PC stick and stop telling each other how others would feel as if our assumption is the blatant truth. Sheesh.

Thank you! I don't care for jokes that (I think) are mean but some stereotypes are funny. I come from German and Irish people and I laugh at drinking jokes even though I am a teetotaller. I'm heavy but I laugh at fat jokes. I am white and I laugh at "white people dance stupid" jokes. Now if I can laugh at these why can't I laugh at other stereotypes?

since i'm the only one here expressing a contrary opinion, i assume you're referring to me, and so i'll thank you to reread my post. because nowhere have i told anyone that they should or should not do a goddamned thing. i've expressed my own opinion on the matter, just as you have. so spare me the "slapping everybody's wrist with the PC stick" BS. you've mischaracterized what i wrote, and then flogged that mischaracterization; a deft bit of misdirection for effect, but misdirection it remains.

Uh, Anastrophe...settle down.

I'll thank you to reread the whole thread please and you will see you are not the only one expressing a contrary opinion and I wasn't referring to you or anyone in particular. I was expressing MY opinion just as everyone else here expressed theirs and you expressed yours. This is why you shouldn't ASSume. Now please step off my coattails, buddy! Gee, I believe this is the first time we have run into each other and it happens like this? I can be rude too, but instead of us acting like that, why don't we chill a bit and try it the nice way?

The joke was a'right I guess. Not much beat and I don't slow dance. I give it a 23.

I don't like the term 'race' as applied to ethnicity and would wipe it from our vocabulary if I could.

If you have an ethnic joke that you think would not offend someone of that ethnicity, if they were in the room when you tell it, then go ahead and let fly.
