For your sake, I hope this poetry contest is legit. Warning: most are not. It's a scam to get your money.

National Library of Poetry Exposé

Excerpt from ABC's 20/20 News Magazine TV program

Jan 5, 1998

The National Library of Poetry is also known by the following names:

--International Library of Poetry

--Poetry.com

--Watermark Press

--International Society of Poets

BARBARA WALTERS: Now, a nationwide contest . . . you can almost guarantee you'll end up being published. Arnold Diaz dispenses some poetic justice in tonight's "Give Me A Break."

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
ARNOLD DIAZ (voice-over): Margaret answered this ad from the National Library of Poetry (a.k.a. Poetry.com), an impressive sounding name . . . Margaret entered the contest and was selected a semifinalist. She was surprised, but happy as a clam.
MARGARET BROUGH: I thought, "Well, maybe I'm better than I think I am."
ARNOLD DIAZ (voice-over): However, Margaret began to think something was funny when the National Library of Poetry asked her for money. Fifty dollars to publish her poem, for her biography, another $20. She paid and the company encouraged her to enter more of its contests, which she did. She was very ambitious.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

ARNOLD DIAZ (on camera): Well, we at 20/20 are nobody's fool, so we came here to the Thomas Jefferson Elementary School to conduct an experiment. We hoped it would show it, that even a second grader can be an award-winning poet.

MISS SILIO (ph), Teacher: Who can tell us what a poem is?

ARNOLD DIAZ (voice-over): Miss Silio's class hadn't studied poetry yet, but the kids agreed to write a poem about their pet.

1st STUDENT: My dog has a black tail. My dog saw a blue whale.

2nd STUDENT: My dog barks all night and all day. When we leave the park, he wants to stay.

ARNOLD DIAZ (voice-over): We entered all the kids in the National Library of Poetry contest. Would any of their rhymes be among those judged the best? Well, what do you know? The answer was yes. . . . All . . . received the same letter saying we have picked you. Out of the thousands of poems, we have chosen your notable work for publication. The classroom was filled with jubilation. Then the job of breaking the bad news fell to me.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
ARNOLD DIAZ (voice-over): The so-called National Library of Poetry admits almost everyone who enters is selected a semifinalist as long as their poem is 20 lines or less. At 50 bucks a piece, the thousands of poems crammed in each of its anthologies brings in hundreds of thousands in fees. The company says it has tougher standards for the finalists awarded cash prizes each year. But the real winner of the contest is the company, that's clear. (on camera) So to the National Library of Poetry -- if you want to pay them to publish their poems, they're willing to talk about how much it would take. But ask them to pay you? Come on...
ARNOLD DIAZ and STUDENTS: ...give me a break!
BARBARA WALTERS: OK. Stay with us. We're right on track. In just a moment, we'll be back.
HUGH DOWNS: OK, give me $50 and you're a poet. Stay with us.
Poetry Ghastly, Published Fastly
by John Woestendiek
from The Philadelphia Inquirer
"To help you further understand what the National Library of Poetry is all about, let me tell you what else [in addition to the opportunity to purchase their poetry anthology] I've been offered in the last year (and also take this opportunity to apologize to my mail carrier):
"My poem mounted on a walnut-finish plaque ($38), read by a professional reader on cassette tape ($29.95), and printed on laminated wallet-sized cards (96 for $49.95); an invitation to join the International Society of Poets, also located in Owings Mills, Md., and attend its annual convention ($595); election into the International Poetry Hall of Fame, and a permanent John Woestendiek Poetry Exhibit in their World Wide Web museum ($189); an application for an International Society of Poets Master Card; and a letter from a music production company saying they had read my first poem and thought it should be set to music -- either rock, soul, country, gospel or folk -- and offering to do that and send me five copies of the cassette ($299)."
The total comes to well over a thousand dollars.
Best of luck to you.
Pinky, you will PM me, pretty please. I will answer you when I get home from college tonight.
There are many legitimate ways to get your poetry published. and contests. I send out stuff all the time, you need to get some books to help you first. They will tell you what is or is not a legitimate place.
Here we have what is called Poet's Market 2007. This is for next year. Check to see if this is on your amazon.
Pinky, this is how I started. It was different from my old history stuff, I knew what to do with that. But for poets, there are many places to send them to, you know I will help you. Do not be discouraged, but continue with your writing my dear.
There's no such thing as gullible...only liars. ;)
This doesn't mean that your poems are not any good...it just simply means that people are out to manipulate others into giving up their hard earned money...They probably didn't even look at your entries and just sent them through out of their own selfish greed...It means nothing...
Keep doing what you love to do...I particularly liked "Memories of Summer"...
Just a scam...a scam that has no aptitude for real poetry...
