Google is beta testing a new service that searches only scholarly, published materials for information. Further, google tells you how many times a work has been cited and by whom.
Finally, and this is the cool part - Google can do a search within your local library (although, to be fair, usually only University libraries are listed) to see if that source exists there (as either a book or a journal).
All in all, its a pretty great service. I used it heavily this semester while working on various research papers.

But will it work for health and social studies?
I know I'll test it and tell you after my next assignment

It sure will. It searches most scholarly journals. Health and Social Sciences included.
