The Queen

Post by AussiePam »

There's an advanced screening of this here this evening - and I was going into town to see the lights with my friends anyway - so we'll take in the film too. I was a bit doubtful at first about the subject matter. It's not that Australians hate the Queen or anything. Hopefully we're not even disrespectful. But she's a bit of an embarrassment these days. A foreign monarch head of our armed forces etc. We tend to ignore it, in the hope all that will somehow go away. It will not be possible to ignore it if Charlie ever gets to the throne of course.... but I digress

The Queen -

For me, Helen Mirren is worth seeing, in anything!!!! A totally amazing actress.

I wish those sentiments were widespread in my country. For the most part, the old girl is held in either fond indifference, or reverence, although those who subscribe to the latter opinion tend to be very elderly.

Oh, yes !

I first saw her and Bob Hoskins in The Long Good Friday, one of George Harrison's Handmade Films, from 1980, or thereabout.

Brilliant actors in a brilliant film.

I'll be interested to hear your impressions, A'Pameluna! This film (surprisingly) left me with a more positive view of why she did what she did after Diana's death. Helen Mirren is absolutely brilliant! The only person who should be unhappy with this film is Prince Phillip.

I think Helen Mirren's portrayal of the Queen was a very positive, sensitive one, Lulu, and I felt some sympathy too. It humanised her, somehow. I'd never thought of her in a fluffy pink dressing gown knocking on the Queen Mother's door and calling out "mummy". Credible. What did you think of Charlie?

We've just got some new cinemas here, Raven. Very civilised. Grin. Large comfy seats, a bar, no kids, no popcorn all over the place. You have a button to press if you want service, and can watch the movie in style, sipping champers.

(That IS style!) I thought the portrayal of Charles was far more sensitive than my impression of him and I just LOVED the Queen Mum, nodding over her cocktails! The conversation between the two Queens as they walked through the garden was interesting, wasn't it?

Finally, the moment when she's stuck in the stream and the camera is behind her as she reveals the only moment of personal grief was BRILLIANT, in my opinion!
