Pancake day!

Yes its shrove tuesday, that time when we peoples in Britain and Ireland (and elsewhere as well) gather round a spitting frying pan, a bowl of batter, and some cooking oil, and make pancakes and then let dad toss them in the air to turn them, and stick them on the ceiling, its a wonderful day! It was one of my absolute favorite days when I was a kid, as I loved pancakes, and we only ever had them on pancake day, (awwwww :-1 ). So whats your favorite pancakes, old school British style with lemon and sugar (the best), American flapjack type things with maple syrup, french style crepes with orange sauce, its all gud init? Is there a downside to the pancake phenomena and what are your pancake day memories like?? Also anyone got any interesting pancake day activities planned for this evening?

Well now there are two threads girls, its all allowed you know, and if you are on a diet then enjoy your cucumber. Ha! :p I shall of course now be contributing to the "official" pancake day thread as well of course. (ahem). :wah:

This is the first I've heard of special pancake day! I've just always had them whenever I was hungry for them. My mom used to make normal pancakes with peanut butter and syrup and then as a joke, she'd make me a tiny pancake, like dime-sized. We'd always laugh at how small she could get the tiny pancake. Over here we have iHOP and they have the best crepes!!!

It's a special day over here called shrove tuesday, I feel very embarressed to admit I don't know why, but i will look it up now, unless someone else gets there first:D

whats ihop? we always have crepes when we go to york, or when the continental markets come to durham there's a little crepe stall and they make them while you watch, filled with ham & cheese...gorgeous

Crepes from Brighton Pier rule! I usually have a cheese and mushroom one on the way down the pier and the way back a cherry and cream.

well unfortunately that's the only time i get them, they dont have any kind of crepe place round here, shame cos i love stuff like that, my only gripe is how pricey they are

Yeah here either. I'm more gutted now as my parents took my son to Brighton today and if I wasn't so fat I could have gone and had some!

ive always fancied going to brighton, never been believe it or not, ive heard there's some saucy shops..?

Ok, first of all, Ihop is... International House of Pancakes- its a big breakfast chain here in the states- and they have good swedish pancakes- my mom,even to this day, makes pancakes every Saturday morning! When I was younger she would make them look like hearts and Mickey Mouse! :-4

Oh Brighton is brilliant, I want to move there, used to go to boarding school closeby and I lived in Eastbourne for a few years. So much to do in Brighton, you gotta go! Not noticed the saucy shops, Convent Garden for that so I'm told. :p

It's the day before the start of Lent when the peoplle were Shriven or absolved.

People ate pancakes on that day to use up the perishables before the fasting.

Bryn is right. Pancakes used up milk, and especially eggs, which were given up for Lenten fasting.

I've already arrived at Ash Wednesday, but last night I did make crepes - which are French pancakes, filled with scallops in wine, tarragon and swiss cheese sauce... YUMMO.

Ash Wednesday is the first day of Lent in the Catholic / Anglican Christian tradition. It is one of the two fast days of the year still fairly strictly observed (the other is Good Friday). Some people don't eat at all, others obstain from meat and eat sparingly. In the Mass of the day, you get sprinkled with ash, or an ashen cross is made by the priest on your forehead - an old sign of repentence or mourning. (This ash is traditionally made from burning the palm crosses from Palm Sunday of the previous Easter). The special words for the day include something like "Remember people you are dust, from dust you came and to dust you will return". The forty day fast continues till Easter Saturday evening, when the first Mass celebrating the Resurrection of Jesus is held.

PS Carnival - is from the Latin for "Goodbye to Meat". In some Catholic countries, Carnival is celebrated with parades etc which ceased in the late afternoon of Shrove Tuesday, when the Faithful were meant to go off to the priest to confess their sins in preparation for Lent. Mardi Gras in New Orleans. Carnival in Rio. Carnival in Venice. etc
