Never Liked Soap Operas

Post by koan »

Without intending any offense to people who have, with good intentions, taken the time to let us know they won't be around for awhile, I'm getting sick of seeing these judgemental threads stating that they want the impossible: For ForumGarden to never change.

Everything in life is in a constant state of change. This is not real life but you can't seriously think it would be interesting to carefully select a group of people we like and freeze them into a static space on the internet. If you want to go, fine! Go and come back later if you want. I started this thread to tell you all that you disrupt the board when you announce why you are leaving unless it is purely for personal reason not related to what you think of the forum members. We care about you as people. I, for one, do not care what you think of ForumGarden as a group.

These dramatic goodbye threads have rarely served a good purpose in the past and have just become another tool for insulting the members. Because that's what they are: an insult.

We care about you but we don't want to hear about what you think ForumGarden used to be, is at present or will become.

I say "we" for matters of convenience. This is a thread for the members to agree or disagree. To offer suggestions on how to discourage departing members from making an ass of themselves.

Are you sick of hearing about how boring, immature, mean, unfriendly... fill in the blank... we are?

W00p W00p. I had a moan about this the other day in Random Thoughts and just got moaned at back so I'm glad that somebody else has said the same. To me it's just attention seeking. PM people to tell them or keep it all in one thread. :D

I'm into the one thread idea.

A "Goodbye, Woe is me" thread for swan songs and a "Sabbatical" thread for people who are going to temporarily disappear. Just add a name.

I started a thread called, 'The Attention Seeking Thread' on MJNO, it got locked surprisingly as most do. :wah:

I am going to pretend I am leaving because I want lots of attention from people begging me to stay then not actually leave.

I guess I'm in the minority but I want to know if someone is leaving and why.

I don't think people should be made to feel like they are not free to post whatever they wish .This place belongs to all of us. :-6

I agree. There should be a thread they can post their name in. If you want to know why then PM them. Otherwise, it usually turns into a public fight or an ignorant judgment of why "we" aren't good enough for them.

Actually, I wasn't referring to anyone at all...but thanks for the good chuckle there ole' pal ole' buddy!!:D :p

Koan, Sorry for throwing your thread, yes I see your point. I feel that it is an attention getter, but most people are sincerely saying goodbye, and for that I'm thankful...

As for complaining about what FG is, was and will be...heck...we are humans (cept for Jimbo of course) change happens, and whining comes along with it...but inevidiably (spelling police come give me a ticket please) it happens...like it or lump it....:D

I find myself always coming back, I stay away for a day or so, then curosity gets the best of me...have to see what the "Wise guy gang" is up to. :p

I know one member started three goodbye threads.

Don't tell me that doesn't get embarrassing. It's much better for all if they just add their names to a list. Over and over and over.

Using Quote properly is not too common and so simple. Strange. Preview post would be a good idea for those that don't know how to use it. :wah:

Koan, I tend to agree. As you probably saw I did my own little going for a while thread. The reason being that I needed to do that to make sure that I actually took that break and didn't just stay anyway. Having a specific thread to do that would be a really good idea, just to say having a fews days off, busy at work, going on my hols, whatever.

Some (please note emphasis - not all) goodbye threads are very self-indulgent, soap opera is a really good way to describe it. I agree that often they seem to stir things up and create factions who then start bitching and whinging, I'm guilty of posting in these threads the same as lots of others here.

Some of the people who have left I personally have been glad to see go whilst others I miss.

This board changes, evolves etc like real life. Sometimes it's boring, sometimes it's challenging, sometimes it's fun, sometimes if I hear the name Michael Jackson one more time I may puke (:wah: ) but it's always worth a visit.

It's similar to soap operas on the tv - sometimes they stagnate, others they are brilliant.

That's why it's good to have a sabbatical thread to let us know who is checking in and out so we know. Your thread was definitely one of the useful ones.

The problem with the negative goodbyes are that when the membership is insulted it's hard to sit there and say nothing. So we go in to defend and those threads take over what would otherwise be fun and productive threads.
