If the dysplasia is caused by the accident, the puppies will not inherit the problem. If she was dysplastic and the vet just happened to notice it when she had her accident, then there is a chance the puppies can have it. Hip formation is controlled by several gene pairs and people who x-ray their dogs and get them rated by the OFA (orthopedic foundation for animals) still get occasional dogs with the problem even from certified parents. HOWEVER, it could cause your Basset pain to carry a litter if she has dysplasia to begin with. I would consult your vet and take into consideration too, whether I wanted puppies. I am assuming the puppies are an accidental breeding, so you would be looking for homes, right :-3

Even in the best of circumstances, there is a risk for giving birth. I doubt she would die, but there is some chance a caesarian might be needed because of her accident. It's hard to guess, and even when things are normal, problems can arise.

Hey, Tmbsgrl...You plan on getting mom fixed after this, right? If memory serves, they can do the procedure when they terminate the pregnancy, if that's the way you're going to go.

Like Rachel said, it's not LIKELY that you will lose your dog, but there is always that chance, however slim. Your veterinarian can best advise you on that.
