My father was born in 1907. His 100th birthday will be June 9, and my sister, brother, brother-in-law, neice, and I will all be with him in Santa Barbara, California to celebrate. It's going to be hard saying goodbye to him at the end of that weekend, because that will probably be the last time I see him.

Wow Kumin, that's quite something! I think so anyway. If you haven't already, and it's possible, ask him about all he's seen in 100 years. I can only imagine.

I always tell people this. Grab your grandparents and find out all they know. My great grandmother lived to 90 something and I was too young and silly to have had the presence of mind to ask her all the quesions I wish I could now.

Probably the silliest would be "how'd you ever wear those corsets?!" :-6

Susie, I liked your post. Very interesting. I wonder about the shampoo though, considering the nasty stuff they'd often put in their hair, like bear grease tonic and junk, I don't think eggs would clean too well. And a lot of those women had great hair. But the egg shampoo reminded me of something I saw on 1900 House; a show where modern people had to live in a Victorian setting and do as the Victorians did. They had no dish soap! I can't remember exactly what the skullery maids used but it was something like flour and salt, something icky like that. I'd love to have lived in those times but I would not have loved the lack of cleanliness.

You are so right, we've been saying how we are going to get my Grandfather on Video tape telling about the WWII and Korean conflict and all of the changes he's seen in his lifetime. He will be 86 this Month (the 24th) and I am going to PA to see him for his birthday, I have every intention of taking the video camera. I told him recently, and he said "you only have a few days though??"...SO TRUE!! He remembers how he felt when he first saw my grandmother when he was in the 8th grade and she was in the 6th grade...WOW!! And they have been together since they were teenagers...how awesome is that??:-4 :-4

I'm so amazed that "8 percent of the homes had a telephone" that I doubt whether it's true. In 1907? Really? There's a table on http://www.cato.org/pubs/journal/cjv14n2-6.html suggesting the figure was about a tenth of that.

Here's some references to iced tea, pre-1907:

1877 Forest & Stream VIII. 411/1 Courtney..became very sick immediately after taking a glass of iced tea after his dinner, and was unable to row.

1880 American Punch Jan. 4/1 Some were talking of..the cooling and invigorating influences of ‘iced tea’.
