The crisis coincides with the run-up to a general election and an anticipated attempt by Musharraf, a close ally of the US, to secure another term. Analysts say Musharraf's main motive in seeking the removal of the independent-minded Chaudhry is to have a more pliable man in place in case of a constitutional challenge to his plans.

The New York Times reported yesterday that Gen Musharraf has been warned that Congress, now under the control of the Democrats, could cut off funds to Pakistan unless it moves more decisively against elements of the Taliban operating in its border regions.

If you want to take the moral high ground in a war in terror perhaps supporting a military dictatorship is not the smartest of moves.

Never mind Korea or Iran at least they are relatively stable and they don't actually have nuclear weapons.
