Drinking in pregnancy, yes or no?
I'm watching the news at the moment and they're talking about drinking during pregnancy saying that you shouldn't drink whatsoever now.
I did when I was pregnant with my son but only the odd one but not a drop with my daughter.
What did you do or think about it?

I was told that the odd guiness was good for you during pregnancy.

When I was preggers I had a glass or two of wine a week (small glasses) which were told was ok at the time. Now though I don't think I'd have any.

They Dept. of Health changed their advice because they think people are too stupid to understand what "one or two units once or twice a week" means.
They worry that children are being born with "foetal alcohol disorder" of
various sorts (this is largely a result of heavy drinking by mothers). There's
no new evidence involved at all.

We've survived pretty well as a species up until now eating and drinking what takes our fancy haven't we? Then again I know bugger all about pregnancy or babies, so my opinion probably doesn't really count!:D
lol Thanks for replying though and you're right. I stick with most but love eggs which you aren't meant to eat if the yolks are runny, did with both of my pregnancies though.

Thanks Bill. It's very sad when they're born addicted. Drugs too when they have to be weaned off from birth, I think that's so awful. It must be the same with smoking and them being born addicted to nicotine but I still see pregnatn women smoking saying they can't give up. It should be a choice, to me they HAVE to for their babies sake.

It's over 30 years since I was pregnant and I used to have the occasional 'worthington E' or 'cinzano & lemonade' .....ignorance was bliss in those days I guess...my 3 kids were all bouncy and healthy babies....and I smoked as well. We were told in the '60s that it was 'good' to smoke ...how times have changed.
If I knew what I know now though, I wouldn't have drunk or smoked.

folks just don't understand moderation anymore do they.
So then the medical profession has to step in and take it to the cautious extreme, I say they should keep pushing NO Drinking during pregnancy, those of us who understand moderation will be fine and maybe those who drink to excess with stop.
Alcohol and drug over use while pregnant are the worst forms of child abuse in my opinion.

Here in the states, drinking during pregnancy is a big no-no. I've even seen some bartenders not serve a woman if they knew she was preggers. Doctors will pretty much tell you not to drink at all, just in case. But, I've seen some doctors OK a drink or two of wine a week for some women, to help with stress, etc. I personally don't think it's a good idea. I've seen women have babies who were under-developed or premature and they only had a few drinks during their pregnancy. Was it the alcohol? Who knows. I wouldn't drink if I were pregnant.... but mostly because I'd be so paranoid of doing anything to mess up my baby.
Now what really ticks me off is smoking during pregnancy. There's really no need of that at all, IMO. There was a woman in her last trimester at work who smoked a lot. I had to bite my tongue every time I saw her out smoking because I really wanted to shake her and say "you flaming idiot! What are you doing?!"
If it's not good for you as a fully developed adult, imagine what it must do to a fetus.

That I hate too. I gave up with both of mine. I also hate seeing someone pushing a pram and smoking at the same time.

It's hard to say - even quite "respctable" people who don't appear to be drinkers can sometimes have a problem with alcohol.

That IMO is a Good Thing - hopefully your oppo would go along with your general drift and live the healthy life in support of you. Once I knew someone whose wife had stopped smoking for the duration.... he showed *marvellous* support by continuing to smoke, evan at home, whilst saying all the time how well she'd done to stop... I thought that was rather a disgrace!

Well, the baby will be born and have immediate withdrawl symptoms as soon as blood ceases flowing down the umbilical cord. Immediate "no fags" Cold Turkey. The damaging effects of smoking will be reduced for the foetus, as it won't be directly inhaling tars and creosotes, etc., but nicotine "addiction" will still be there... even though, as happens in some cases, mothers "give up" but use "patches", or nicotine chewing-gum!

I wouldn't be marrying my man if he wasn't a gent in all respects. As for the showing of "marvelous" support, I'd feel sorry for the woman who got knocked up by such an ass.
