Karl who is Jades dad has Shingles, he never had the Pox but has caught Shingles from his nephew. He can't come to see Jade now this weekend. Anyone know how bad it can get? Has anyone here had it? How long will he be contagious for?

Had he seen him in the previous 2 weeks, they say that they normally are contagious for that period before.

not saying so for sure but your baby most likely is going to be unaffected if she is still nursing then that is even a higher chance as she should still have a pretty strong immune system from you.

As for Shingles egads my brother had them and he was in a lot of pain a large band around his upper chest and onto his back, beneath his arms itched for ages and hurt like mad. He actually had some nerve damage and has lost feeling in some spots and has odd itchy bouts every now and then. He was one miserable boy.

Thanks Minks and everyone else. I am really worried now as I've just read all of this http://www.aftershingles.com/faq.html

I'll have a look at your link now Minks. Karl is out at the moment getting something to eat. I told him to get indoors and don't go near anyone! At least you can't catch Shingles from Shingles but from what I have read he could be in for a really bad time and not be able to see his baby for a couple of weeks or even longer as it says babies under 12 months.

I thought you could catch shingles from someone if they have had chicken pox already, it's part of the herpes virus. My sister in law caught shingles from a patient in hospital.

WHO CAN GET SHINGLES

Can anyone get shingles?

Only people who have had chicken pox can get shingles

Is shingles contagious?

No. Shingles occurs only when the virus that caused chicken pox, which has stayed in the body for many years, becomes active. You cannot get shingles from someone else. You can only get it from the varicella zoster virus in your own body.

Is it okay for someone with shingles to be around other people?

Someone who has never had chicken pox or the chicken pox vaccine could get chicken pox from a patient with shingles. This won't happen after the blisters have dried up.

Can you get other herpes diseases if you have shingles or take care of someone with shingles?

No. The varicella zoster virus causes only chicken pox and shingles. It does not cause cold sores or genital herpes.

Karl hasn't had Chickenpox.

Yes, so if you have had chicken pox already and you go near someone with shingles it can restart the virus that is in your body :-3

Just read that bottom bit, so is it shingles then? Thought you only got that if you have already had CP

seems we need an expert here....

I had heard if you had chicken pox as a kid and it was a mild case you were not out of the woods and as an adult you could get shingles which yes is worse and is deemed "adult chickenpox" Ok so it's hugely confusing.

My brother had chickenpox and shingles... how is that.

I have read up on loads of different sites now and I am sure his doctor got it wrong and he has Chickenpox. His went to his mums as well and she said that is what it looks like. His back is covered, has a couple in his mouth, one on his cute butt, a few on his face and chest. Doesn't sound like Shingles to me. He said not to worry as he hasn't any on my favourite part of his body, lol. He doesn't know me very well then as that is his torso, not his little tinky winky. :wah:

That sounds like chicken pox alright, my brother did not have any in his mouth and I thought shingles only appeared on your trunk/torso.

If he had shingles he would be in a lot of pain where the shingles are, they usually form a circle round the torso, round the shoulder etc. I remember the doctor examining mine and touching the raised area, I nearly went through the roof with pain, he knew immediatley then that it was shingles.

Yeah so I read too but he said he has no pain. I just called him and told him he has Chickenpox, not Shingles and that his doctor was wrong.

Doctors often get it wrong! I was treated for Scabies once, misdiagnosed infected eczema, had to paint this nasty stuff all over my body, I wept all night it hurt so much, made the eczema twenty times worse

They're not all bad, the one that got the diagnosis right wept with me 48 hours later when she peeled the clothes off my skin. She went to town on the other doctors in the practice.

That's the trouble with GP's. So many different illnesses and symptoms. Specialists at least they just deal with certain areas.

Anyone who has had Chicken Pox has the potential to develope Shingles. Chicken Pox although cured stay dormant in your body and can reoccur since it is a form of Herpes which you never get rid of.

Shingles are brought on my your nerves, shingles usually follow a main nerve, that why the pain can vary.

When you break out in shingles your reactivating the Chicken Pox virus, shingles which usually affects a small part of your body - unlike Chicken Pox which will affect the whole body.

Skin rash will appear with a fever and this rash will itch. Skin rash appears in a row like shingles on a roof, which then follows a main nerve.

Shingles is common on elderly and rare for young people.

My Mother-in-Law currently has Shingles - so the above is what I know.

I have never heard of Shingles being passed on - contagious

Shingles are small blisters on your skin - they then dry up and leaves the scales/shingles. Variety of medications are used - pills & creams to control the dryness and the pain.

Karl needs to start meds immediately & find out why he's nervous/stressed..

Good luck

Thanks a lot Patsy. :)

He has been given anti-biotics and lotion but I'm sure it's Chicken Pox which he's never had. He doesn't have the symptoms of Shingles. He doesn't have any pain at all, he just has the spots randomly in most places which itch.
