Are there things you do just because they remind you of someone?

Post by KB. »

I wrote a few of these in my last story, but would like to know about others and their own living "allusions". I do things, talk about things, eat things, etc because they remind me of something else. What about you? Doesn't have to be someone, could be something, or a time in yur life that was different, better or worse.

I often find sayings my dad used (when I was a kid) popping out of my mouth, even using his inflections. Freaky..

I remember when I was younger thinking I'd never say or do the things my Mum did, now my kids are getting older I am well aware of just how similar I sound to her

When Jim and I broke up a few years ago, I remember playing 'his' music channel to listen to 'his' music, now we're back it never goes on :wah:

My dad's favorite saying was. "Same difference", it used to make my blood boil. I say it all the time now, usually to watch their (who ever I say it to) blood start to simmer.

I have all kind of sayings from my parents. It sort of makes me feel closer to them now that they're gone. I used to hate it when my mom said "Because I'm the adult here...", and now I tell my little boy that all the time

You have to be real damn careful when you associate things with someone. I do it because it helps me tell my stories and I just always have. The being careful part, a recent person I associated a lot of things with. Sunshine, strawberry ice cream, tomatoes, buttercups, and Blue Skies (The Willie Nelson song, not Blue eyes crying in the rain, but Blue Skies, listen to it It is a wonderful song, on his stardust album.) I'm not the kind of person who needs to forget though. More good than bad I can always find.

Fun topic, KB.

When I'm reading, I wear my glasses on the end of my nose.

I do crosswords in ink.

I fold my magazines in half when I read.

I abbreviate "hospital' to read "hosp." And I even say "hosp."

I own orange nail polish. That I never wear.

I sing "The Most Beautiful Girl in the World."

I do these things because they remind me of my grandmother.

I say "white on rice," "like a hen on a junebug," "no sh*t, Red Ryder" and probably other things because my dad does. It rubbed off.

In department stores I always open up the Drakkar Noir and the Grey Flannel because they remind me of my ex fiance.

I listen to skads of songs just because they remind me of someone or because they are that person's favorite song.

I like to use Fab laundry soap and Irish Spring because my mother in law used those. I buy Pepperidge Farm cookies for her, too.

I eat Cheese Nips because my father in law liked them.

I play Scrabble because he and I used to play it together.

Can't think of anything else really right now.

Here is the paragraph I refered to.

"Crispy chicken sandwiches remind me of Joanie's, which I also call the center of the universe; reubans remind me of my Father, White Russians can be two different things, one a man that changed his ways, and one a thing that goes by Melpomene. When I say "an old friend" it refers usually to someone I have known for years, but wasn't really friends with till recently. Muse, can be singular, or encompass a dozen different things, watch capitalization for the key. The same goes for sirens; they and the muses cross paths and become one on occasion. When I say I want Norah Jones to serenade me in a suit she got for her birthday, I mean just that. If I capitalize Flea, I am talking about the sister of a woman who referred Amos Lee to me. I will on occasion rhyme. Kenneth Coles remind me of a woman in Houston who talked about killing me in her sleep. She wore Gucci, but told me Kenneth Cole was good enough. They remind me money is nice, but really doesn't mean **** in the end. Thank God for outlet stores. I buy my clothes at the Goodwill. Khalil Gibran reminds me of finding old books my Father had, and they remind me of the Father of a friend, who didn't know I liked reading Gibran so much, but bought me a nice book for a birthday because he thought I might. I am weak for cheesecake because of the daughter of that Father. She cooked three for me because she didn't think the first two were good enough, I got to keep them all though. When I eat a piece now, it reminds me of long ago birthdays, women who care enough to try harder than most, and how nasty I can be to people I care about if I am not aware of myself. I talk about how skinny I am a lot; I used to be the total opposite. There never is a middle for long."
