Actually, this is what my cousin's did before retiring down to Florida. They could not decide where in Florida they wanted to live, so they signed up for this and went down two or three times. Of course, they also allowed their house up here to be used while they were gone.

Not yet. I've been meaning to do a pic documentary of Melbourne.

Maybe this weekend.

Outside of my front door it's crackheads and hookers.

My backdoor leads to the breathtaking Indian River with sailboats and dolphins.

I'm not exaggerating! Front and back. It's hard to fathom the stark differences.

There was a fairly recent movie about this same sort of thing... some romantic comedy called The Holiday that was based on the real-life website HomeExchange.com.

An unaffiliated, free home exchange hub is Know Your Trade. All home exchanges are rated and reviewed by the founders as well as members of the various clubs. Home exchange advice is also available. There are over 60 home exchange clubs, so it is important to pick the one that works best for you.

While most exchanges are done for vacations, there are many other reasons to do a home exchange. Looking for an area to settle is one, as the poster pointed out. It is a great way to do that because one "lives like a local" on a home exchange, rather than isolated in a hotel.

Ten minutes from rainforests and three minutes from a beach? Melbourne is a bit far, but... perhaps I could stay with friends or at a hotel for a bit then hike through the rainforest when I'm out there?
