Part of the reason why there's not this instant democracy in Iraq is because people are still recovering from Saddam Hussein's brutal rule. Sort of an interesting comment, I heard somebody say: "Where's Mandela?". Well Mandela's dead, because Saddam Hussein killed all the Mandelas.That may be the most intelligent thing I've heard President Bush ever try to come out with, though as usual his conclusion is wrong, his wording is unfortunate and his delivery is an insult to everyone who's died as a result of his Presidency, particularly (though not exclusively) the better part of a million Iraqis.
What needs to be borne in mind is that Nelson Mandela was able to take power in South Africa and establish his Truth And Reconciliation Commission because of internal political and social consensus. Nobody can achieve that same effect in Iraq because there's a fifth of a million occupying Western troops backed by air superiority stood on Iraqi ground. No Iraqi "Mandela" can come to power without US backing in such circumstances. Nobody with such backing can achieve reconciliation or uncover truth. Even the current Iraqi political leadership can't suspend Blackwater for more than two days for murdering eleven unarmed Iraqi civilians without that demand being overriden by US interests and Blackwater re-established in its profit-making position. Saddam Hussein didn't kill all the Mandelas, the continuing US "liberation" is suppressing their emergence and you can safely bet your last dollar that whoever's ruling in Baghdad after the eventual Western withdrawal will be rabidly anti-American.
Meanwhile, "The Nelson Mandela Foundation is assuring the public that the former South African president is still alive".
This fiasco is entirely the fault of those among the US electorate who didn't actively vote against this catastrophic administration, and nobody is going to suffer more than US interests as a result. This isn't a temporary glitch, this is a country headed for impotent insignificance and not before time.
