Grief Counselors: Need some info please

Post by RedGlitter »

Some of you guys know I'm looking for something to flesh out my life a little bit. Something where I can be beneficial to someone. I ditched the paralegal idea because I am not cut out very well for what it takes. But I've had it in my head that I might be cut out for bereavement counseling. Except I understand it requires four years of college, a masters degree and a hospital internship. Is this standard procedure or is there any way I can do this in a more feasible and timely manner?

Thank you Minks. I probably could get a loan of some kind. It's just that I have never considered myself college material in any form beyond the local community college anyway, and I honestly can't see myself trying to get a masters degree to do this. But it's something I feel I can do better than it was done to me during my sad time.

You are right about the requirements for professional counseling. Non professional counseling, though well intentioned, could do more harm than good. You are college material. Your posts alone would seem to indicate that you have the necessary skills and intelligence. The key is motivation and discipline to go along with the former. If you want it bad enough, you can find a way to do it.

I was also very interested in bereavement counseling. I did a lot of investigating, and the years of school were not something I could afford, or commit to either at my age. I agree with everyone that you would be great at it. Check out life coaching. There are a few good schools, and you would counsel clients in all aspects of life. You can get certification with respected agencys to do this work. If someone with integrity pursues this avenue of helping others, they can often do more good than someone with more formal education who is lacking in other life skill areas. It took me a while to realize that bereavement isnt just loss of a loved one, because of death. It can be any loss. Job, relationship, self esteem etc..... One of the best schools is in London. There is another one in Canada.

Redglitter... Lon is right - if you want it bad enough you'll find a way!

Don't doubt yourself hun....It is very clear to me that you've got what it takes sweetie - have faith in yourself.

I'm also seriously considering a complete turnaround as far as my career goes.

A lovely friend told me recently "It's your life.....GO! GO! GO!"

So you know what?? GO! GO! GO! girl :-4:-4
Very nearly perfect ... :D
