To question the holocaust? Or should I say the Holocaust Industry.
Thank you, Scrat. For a reason, somewhat unknown to me, that opening bit has made me chuckle quite mirthfully.
I don't have an answer to your question. Just saying thanks.

It's a shocking and inept piece of legislation, I haven't the slightest idea why Germany and Austria have been so dim-witted as to enact it.

Presumably because anti-Semitism has such a dreadful history in those parts. I've no doubt at all about the magnitude of the history but the use of race or history specific legislation is just plain unproductive. There's laws penalizing behaviour likely to cause a breach of the peace, that's both general and applicable to those situations. That ought to be enough without being inflammatory.

Maybe if you were german you might feel differently about it. It's their country, their choice their laws their history. The nazis are not something that should be forgotten about as it could happen in any country. It's a warning where any kind of racism can lead. It;'s not so much the denial as the incitement that goes along with it. germany and austria both have problems with resurgent right wing parties

So what do you do with those who incite racial hatred in america? (black or white) Pat them on the head and tell them it's OK?

We send police to protect them from those who would act against them, believe it or not. Speech, even hate speech, is protected here. Behavior is a different story.

The US has it's own problems with nazis and racial tensions. No offence but you not really in a position to lecture other countries on how they deal with issues of freedom of speech. The problem is the same but different in each country.

Neo Nazism is a real problem in austria and germany, if they get away with pretending it didn't happen the next bit is Hitler was really a good guy and did well for Germany.
With the widening of the EU and more workers from eastern europe coming in it would be easy to stir up old hatreds if you don't have an educated enough populace to see through it. Allowing the denial of the holocaust just feeds the hate mongers. It needs to be kept out in the open for people to see.
I have nephews from Austria one of whom is coming out with some of this crap. Yet in the same sentence he condemns the germans, (like many austrians he can't stand them, think scots, english but with more passion) Like all teenagers they tend to be influenced by the last passionate opinion they heard. When you ask why do you think like that he can't answer, people have to be taught to think as well as to hate. When they stop and think about it they don't agree with it.
The trouble is "no that wasn't the way it really was" is not as gut wrenchingly appealing as "get the bastards". It tends to appeal to those who feel they have nothing to look forward to better have someone to blame and feel part of something
It's not just aimed at jews, nowadays it's muslims. turks and blacks -all the usual suspects if you like. These guys tie in with some of the right wing groups in america. it's an international issue you just have different shades of the same problem. In scotland we have some sections of the media running articles about how the number of catholics is rising because of eastern -mainly polish-immigrants coming in. You as an american may think "so what?" But the same papers tut tut over sectarian violence and wonder why it's increasing again.
You can't stop racial hatred but letting people pretend it didn't happen is not the best way to try. Germany has to find it's own solutions.
Maybe if barack obama with Hilary as vice president gets elected you can feel smug about the progress you have made. (Is that likely by the way?)

Where's my lecture? I agree with you. "It's their country, their choice their laws their history." I'm just glad my country's choice is different.

If a white person says something along the same lines they get hammered, they can lose everything. The same largely goes for saying things "anti-semitic" in nature ect. There is little difference in my eyes.
I think we need to draw a distinction between legal and social repercussions. the OP was about lawful restriction of speech, not people's reactions.

You're right I was reading too much in to what you said.
