How many of you have heard of the sharing program?? And do you know that it is NOT recommended to have on your computer?

I brought my computer into my company to get cleaned of adware and spyware and the tech went bazerrkkkkkkk!! when he saw Limewire on my computer and said its a NO-NO....

Limewire's adware-free. My reaction was because I'd recommended the package to Wendy.

Most peeps I know shun limewire due to the crap it stores on your pc.

It mainly causes viruses only when you download games and stuff but music for the most part is pretty safe.. If the file ends in .exe that often means its a virus! dont download it!

If you have any files with banking, credit card, password lists or Social Security information anywhere on your computer -- and you're using Limewire, you are at risk for Identity Theft!

We recommend two immediate courses of action.

First, remove Limewire immediately from any computers under your control.

Second, change all passwords associated with any accounts accessed by your computer. If you find any suspicious activity in any of your banking or credit card accounts, notify your vendor immediately.

You don't think people criticizing it have an agenda perhaps? Like retaining control of copyright management in the face of illegal amateur gifting?

If you have a running up to date resident virus checker, how does the traffic from a file share package constitute any sort of threat to your own files?

some mean and nasty people out there spot. Im on a certain kind of forum thats not the type you can publisize and some guys on there have told me horror stories about how easy it is to gain access to peoples files etc. Alot admittedly was done through irc. But its still going on now and identity fraud is a big big issue these days. They have all kinds of gadgets and gismos to help them with their evil deeds. If someone clever enough wants to hack your pc, they will try to do it. Not everyone runs virus/malware/spyware/trojan catchers often enough.

Limewire Legal or Illegal

Limewire and other file sharing software is legal. Using it to upload or download copyright protected media - music, videos, images, software - without the copyright holder's consent is illegal because it is theft.

Here are more opinions and tips:

Limewire says its legal because technically its just a "file sharing" service and it is not held responsible for the files that are downloaded onto the system. Only the users are responsible. That's why when you download songs from Limewire, it's legal for them, but NOT for you.

If you are not paying some sort of fee to download, it is illegal.

Don't be fooled by the fee you pay to use the pro version of Limewire. The artists of the songs you download don't get a penny of that! ("LimeWire offers two versions of the software: LimeWire Basic which is free of charge; the other is LimeWire PRO which costs a small fee, features faster download speeds and better search results, including up to 6 months of free updates and customer support via email.")

Even if you download a copyrighted song for your own personal use, it's still illegal. Perhaps one could skate around the issue if they already own a legal copy on a CD, but then why download it if that's the case. Any fees paid to Limewire are for purchasing the software and that's it.

Lime Wire is not illegal software. All it is is file sharing. However many people abuse this by sharing songs without the copyright. For example if you have produced a song, then share it on Limewire, anyone else can legaly have it for free. But when you haven't made it, but an artist has, who has copyright on that song (which they all do) downloading that song without permission from the producer, it is totaly illegal.

Basically, yes, downloadig music from any free service is probably illegal. You may be paying Limewire for the software, but that's just for the software, so the money goes to Limewire, you are not paying for the song. To be safe, do not download music for free. If it's free, nobody has paid the artist.

Downloading songs and other copyrighted material is illegal, but if you wanted to share a music file of you singing or playing an instrument, then that is perfectly legal.

I have had my fare share of songs i got from limewire and if I could, I would return them to the artists and companies that worked hard to make them.

I've visited the websites of a few popular filesharing software distributors and looked for disclaimers, TOS, End User Licenses, etc. I have only quoted bits of relevent information to give you an idea of what to expect. You know Chezzie, there's a stack of stuff on peer-to-peer sharing that isn't music, isn't video, isn't copyright anything. There's a lot of public domain material out there. To say downloading with Limewire is illegal is blatantly false.

As for prejudicing your system security, of course you have to have a resident virus checker. Without one of those your browser's a complete risk to start with. Obviously you have to run virus protection. Other than that, yes it's possible to deliberately share more than a single folder on your hard drive. You can deliberately share your personal details, your home documents, your bank account login - but why would you be that daft? The default is to allow your limewire file directory to be shared, I'd not call it a security risk just because someone could change the settings to share their entire C drive.

If its copywrited and you havent got the copyright holder's consent it's illegal to download it, END OF spotty speck blob.

It may seem insane/stupid or whatever to you who is pc savvy not to share files on yer pc but theirs thousands upon thousands who havent a clue what their doing and do just that. Infact the amount of peeps that dont even bother with an anti-virus programme or firewall is staggering. Now we have wireless and networking, theirs alot of peeps out there sharing their internet with neighbours because they havent bothered setting it up password protected etc...

Two radio interviewers, six photographers from the Sun, the Mirror, the People, the News of the World, Brides and Gowns and the British Medical Journal - which is odd because I only phoned the BBC to tip them off, I've no idea how it spread.

It has been, there are lots of versions of BearShare some of which carried adware at various times.

Frostwire seems a perfectly good current freeware open source alternative this year, it's a Limewire derivative which is under active development and properly mature and not loaded with unwanted components.
