This just in, Walmart is beginning to open Doctor's clinics in it's stores! Now you can shop for a frying pan, & visit the Doctor for your flu symptoms all at the same time!:wah:

Well last year I went to a "Walk-in Wellness Center" here in FL, that was not affilliated with Wally's, but I imaginge it would be similar, & I was satisfied with the outcome. I was diagonosed, prescribed meds, & shortly thereafter was cured. Just like going to the $100 Doc OV! So. . . . .

(Guess it was only a matter of time before Wally expanded past the Eye Docs, to Med Docs.)

Didn't some film heroine have a baby in the Walmart restroom? Maybe that's what inspired the latest novel new innovation.

I like Walmart, but please keep them far from Australia.

Yes, they do have that department at WalMart. For some areas where they cannot afford a trip to the doctor, it is a viable alternative for non-threatening illnesses. It is either that or a trip to the emrgency room, to treat a severe cold or flu.

I have this bad cold, lost my voice too at school-that in itself is a story-but all the kids, bus drivers told me to go to WalMart to have the nurse practioner treat me. I opted out of their kind offer, and if I am ill next week will go to my doctor. But they do all use this service, which means they will get more medical treatment then they usually do.

Its tough enough at a grocery store with lines of people waiting for you to put your money/card into wallet & get out of the way.

Walmart's a ZOO - no thank you, my moneys just as good elsewhere..

I also Loathe TARGET. Not for the same reasons as Walmart. Walmart is trying to take over the world. Target is just filled with lots of garbage and junk. My friends all love Target.

I know, it sounds like a bad thing. I know I can afford to go to a doctor. For my school's neighborhood, it is a good alternative, or no doctor at all. Or filling up the ER and endangering high risk cases that need to be there. I didn't even know they did that until this week. I am stalling until Tuesday to go if still sick-to the doctor, not Walmart. We are off for election day here.

People complain that there's no affordable healthcare for the poor, then when someone provides it, they're satan for taking advantage.

A Wal Mart mini clinic is hardly healthcare. Have you seen these clinics ?

Its smaller than a jail cell. They treat only the most simplistic ailments.

A generic visit to a family doctor isnt whats breaking Americas healthcare system.

Its all the specialty bells and whistles and hospital visits.

I don't like Wal-Mart, either, overall. But they are so much cheaper

than other places, you can't go somewhere else to make a point

if you are financially strapped with no health insurance. I go to my

regular gynecologists for those check-ups, and I can get low-cost

mammograms at a hospital near here (only 2 days a year, though!)

but why pay even $20 more if you don't have to? The main reason

the doctors are cheaper at Wal-Mart is the lower cost of overhead.

Any regular doctor's offices in this county have to hike their fees

to make the payments on the building and parking lot.

The one near me has a big board with the fees listed for many common

things people need at a doctor's office. Every one of them as far as

I can tell is much cheaper than if you were to go to a regular doc.

Some cases, HALF the price. I don't know about some of you but I

can't afford to pay more for the prestige of going to a regular doctor.

I got good service, I liked the doc, and maybe my problem wasn't

earth-shattering (sciatica pain) but he HELPED me.

Kid's running a fever. Mom decides to wait; maybe it'll pass

Fever rises. Kid has more symptoms (make 'em up on your own. I'm no doctor). Mom knows they can't afford to go to the doctor. Calls her mom for advice. Gives the kid a spoon of table sugar and a shot of bourbon.

Kid starts hallucinating and screaming about being attacked by giant wobblies. Mom panics and calls an ambulance.

Ambulance takes the kid to the emergency room. Doctors feverishly work on the kid trying to save his life.

Doctor tells the mom that the surgery was successful, but the kid will only have partial use of . Doctor asks how she could have let his condition progress so far?!? This could have been easily avoidable had she brought the kid in sooner.

Mom spends the rest of her days paying doctor bills, ambulance charges, medications, etc, etc.Scenario 2

The one by my school has a licensed nurse practioner, and a doctor at specific times during the week.

The only thing wrong with Accountable's scenario-if it is a severe flu or cold symptoms, you are turned away from the ER's here right now. An ambulance won't even take you away, since no one will take you in.

Chronsi's right, espicially with little kids with flu symptoms are not seen, nothing they can do but tell you to alternate between tylenol and motrin for the fever.

I don't know what a DR could do for you for the FLU - never in my life have I've seen a DR for the FLU.

You usually have to ride it out.

I have noticed everytime my husband was in the ER, the lobby was bogged down - over crowded with colds & FLU - why ?

I've always considered ER for a serious condition - you know HEART ATTACK..

So, perhaps Walmart is a good alternative for those who feel the need medical advice for the cold & flu.

I just think they are a cut above in their product selection. They have a really outstanding food line as well. Archer Farms offers the type of variety you wont find anywhere besidessay a Byerlys but you pay through the nose

for those carpeted floors and live lobsters.

The couple of times I've been I've seen an M.D. and I do know the

difference, maybe he didn't graduate from Harvard but he was in fact

an M.D. not a nurse practitioner. Ther is nothing wrong with an NP,

either, oftentimes they see more things than the doc does, and have

more experience with the day to day types of things.

Oh yes, Patsy, severe flu symptoms where dehydration has set in, colds that have turned into bronchitis or pneumonia, they go to the ER all the time. When there is no insurance, no money, and a person/child is that sick, that is the only recourse left. Very typical in large urban centers, and here in Baltimore the edict was set about a month ago that those patients would be turned away. The hospitals were already filled with other priority patients.

(no offense, but when was the last time you went to an ER? Last couple of trips with my husband due to a seizure or complication of his illness, many people were in there for flu/cold complications, I was always worried he would come home with something after the trip. Probably about 1/3-1/2 the people there were for this, and this is suburbia)

That is life for people without insurance, or a regular doctor. The ER is the solution when there is no where to go. That is why problems arise with ER rooms closing, consolidation of these cases in certain facilities, and substandard care because there is not enough personel to treat the patients. A large nursing shortage here, nurses work 12 hour shifts, I have no idea what the doctors work.

My husband is doing great now - after a triple by-pass in 2002

Cancer in 2004 - and my 16 surgerys - the ER is a second home to us.

The ER was always full of colds & flu - which as you said I was afraid my husband would get - or me, there were enough complications.

I suppose I'm well supplied with antibiotics & other meds that as soon as something arises I start meds immediately.

Remember the old remedies from Gram or Mom - Cod liver Oil

in a gel cap - anyone who's ever had any upper respiriatory infections should be on Cod Liver Oil. I would give a child a daily dose along with a regular multi vitamin.

I couldn't stand that junk when I was a kid - now I'm truely a believer.

The Medical Field is risky no matter where you go - I'm sure my sister has seeked medical attention at Walmart - thats ok

I'm glad there's choices for all.

Sounds like there's a niche to provide a service to people not sick enough for the ER nor, um, established enough to have a family physician.

Yes, I am with you, Patsy. We can take ourselves and loved ones to better facilities. I am glad ER trips are fewer now, and hope they are for you and your husband also. I was glad to hear of an alternative center for some of my students, who probably would get no medical attention at all, except for serious bone breaks or something like that. (I felt kind of nice, when they asked me multiple times to go there, that was their concept of medical attention-how fortunate the rest of us are) Of course, they didn't mind when Bill Nye taught the class the rest of the day...........................:wah:

Oh there are alot of folks who take their kids who have the stomach virus or cold/flu to the E.R. I saw lots of it when I worked in the E.R. Most were medicaid patients who wouldn't take off work to take their kid to a doctor during the day.

Amarillo has now put in emergency clinics for people to go to with cold symptoms, instead of clogging the E.R.s
