I don't have a problem with tasers. The only problem in the story is that the officer missed. Here in the U.S., most officers that I know of have to be tased themselves before they can even carry one. Makes sense to me, and I am pro-gun, but do they have to get shot before they carry a gun? Anyway a taser being a less lethal weapon is a good alternative.

I hesitate to put myself into this position of yet again being the site pedant but the device was given its name in 1974 by its inventor. He called it the Thomas A. Swift Electric Rifle, and he contracted that to an acronym T.A.S.E.R. when writing about it, which evolved into TASER. Common usage has since seen this take on an identity as a regular word, with the etymology fading from common memory (just as happened with scuba, laser and radar). What isn't an option is to invent alternative spellings. It's not a taser gun either, it's a taser, there's a really sad redundancy in the concept of a Thomas A. Swift Electric Rifle gun.
What I think is that they're officially meant to be used when countering a physical threat to either the officer or a member of the public, and they're actually being more and more used to command obedience. They ought to be made illegal in the hands of all enforcement staff, especially those in psychiatric units and prisons, all of whom will go to hell anyway regardless of whether they abuse their charges or not because they're all sick bastards to begin with.

Fuzzy can you send me a link to where you found that tasers are a lethal weapon in Texas. I searched it and couldn't find one although I seen a few where they thought they should be. I also called a friend who is chief investigator at the sheriffs department and he said they are definitely less than lethal.
I cannot argue with the facts that there have been some deaths from the use of tasers, but in most cases it is still better than a gunshot. Each case has different variables in what use of force should be used whether it be pepper spray, taser, gun or some other means.

In most cases it's in circumstances where, had a gun been used, the officer would have been put on trial for homicide - against unarmed people who weren't attempting to flee. These taserings are in addition to gun use, not as an alternative to gun use.

There are other ways to restrain a child before we need to pull out the tazers.
Our whole school staff are all learning these holds etc in a couple of months time.
I am sure I would try reasoning & other forms of restraint before I need the tazer:-6

Wouldn't the idealist teacher say "I'd sooner be dead than carry a taser" rather than up the stakes and worsen the power play in schools? How could anyone ever go into teaching knowing they might end up tasering a child because that's the norm for enforcing authority? The only way to avoid that is for teachers to behave like priests.
