An elephant crushed a keeper to death at a Vienna Zoo yesterday.

Zoo-Keeper Gerd Kohl (39) was killed after he had showered the elephant, Abu, as part of the morning routine, according ti a veternarian.

The elephant, a four-year old bul, pinned Kohl to the wall and speared him with his tusks.

Kohl, who had worked at the zoo since 1996, had cared for the elephant since his birth.

The zoo's elephant house was closed as Austrian police gathered evidence . Located near the imperial castle Schoenbrunn, is one of Vienna's most popular attractions.
