Don't know if they're all 'homeless' or not but Victoria BC has a huge number of street people on every downtown corner. Some say that Vancouver is paying their homeless to get on a bus somewhere else in preparation for the Olympics in 2010. However it's happening, what do you think helps a city's homeless population?

I can't imagine anyone staying outdoors year-round in BC. Given that, the people must be those who reject societal norms. The best way to help them is to leave them alone, institutionally speaking.

I can't image anyone wanting to live on the streets in the winter. But, I sometimes wonder ..... are some of these people here by choice?

Of course they are. There, I mean, not necessarily homeless. Being homeless frees you to go where you want. Personally, I'd head south ... way south.

What helps ?

Hmm...the answers could be as individual as the persons, but certainly accessible alcohol and chemical dependency prevention and treatment programs are beneficial. These things usually play a strong role in peoples lives falling apart.

Cant say I know how to fix the job market. but education in personal finances is a good start. Many people just dont know how to manage money.

If homelessness is a plight in your city I believe reform is the key to self sufficiency. If Canada has welfare it should be coupled with job skills training with the emphasis being on short term handout long term employment.

Is the city building acceptable low income housing ?

Minneapolis is razing original low income tract housing and combining neighborhoods of varying incomes.

Low wage workers are finding themselves living next door to higher income bracket families.

This is beneficial on several levels.

It breaks down barriers between races, it rids the city from the burden of typical project neighborhoods which inevitably breed crime.

Those dwellers escape unsafe living conditions, theres more accountability to keep the streets clean and free of drug dealing and prostitution activity.

These new developments are nice, anyone would be proud to call the area home.

These plans are long term and require cooperation from city council on down to the willingness of citizens to take a leap of faith but issues like homelessness require big ideas. Its not an easy fix.

One version of the concept.

One option, Im not sure I agree with it but it is an option apparently cities around the country are taking a closer look at.
