Went to the Library today

Post by WonderWendy3 »

yes, I wrote Libary on purpose incorrectly....my son pronounces it that way, I didn't catch it fully until today on our way home from the library....he said "thanks for taking me to the libary Mom"...I told him he was welcome and proceeded to correct his pronounciation....

All three of my boys have struggled with reading in their younger ages. My oldest still isn't a big fan of reading unless it is something that he REALLY wants to read about....my middle son made himself read better in the first grade, he was the poorest reader in his class in the beginning of the year and by the end of the year he was top of his class, he read more books than anyone in his class....:yh_clap My youngest one has despised reading, he is in the 5th grade and has always hated reading...well, during spring break, his step-mom somehow got him interested in reading books by C.S. Lewis, he loves "the Lion, the witch and the wardrobe" and has read that, and "Prince Caspian", "The horse and his boy" all in the last two weeks....

Today we went and checked out "The magician's nephew" at the library, where we haven't been in AGES, its only about 5 miles from our home too :o We had to re-activate our cards, which I just found in a "junk box" last night....yes I am ashamed of myself....

My son thought the coolest part of the library was the fact that it was FREE and that they are giving him a whole two weeks to read a book that he will probably finish tomorrow!!:D

That's great Wendy! Does your library also have videos/DVDs and music CDs to check out? The new one here does and I was all over the free music! :D

I bet you are very proud of your son teaching himself to read better. He should be proud of himself too. If you can read, you can do most anything. So many worlds are open to you. Real worlds and dream worlds as well to escape to.

Yeah, the library is like the original internet in a way.

Glad you found something good today!

Thanks Red!:-6

I am not sure about the music, but I know they have videos, I saw them and used to check them out years ago....and I inquired about free fax machine use...which I need to use soon to send in an application to a company, I usually pay up to 3 bucks for that service, and its FREE at the library.:-3

I also asked about the internet service since I might have to go to the library in the future, I'm not sure how the whole moving and getting cable hooked up at the new place will be, and have to start online classes on Monday....

I have a feeling that my son and I will be going to the library MUCH more now, I feel horrible that we didn't get there before now, and that I thought that they close around 4pm, of course I heard "I told you so" when we saw the hours of operation were 8am to 9pm....:o

I am very proud of my son, and I tell him so every chance I get. I hope he sticks with this enthusiasm for reading, I know that it is hard for him to focus, so he is really overcoming a disabilty without me sitting on him, and for that I am even more proud of him!:-4

Oh cool, they have nighttime hours! I wish ours did.

Do you remember having Scholastic Book Club in grade school? Where the teacher would give you a little catalog of book titles and you took it home, picked out the ones you wanted and Mom would tape money to the catalog and you'd return it to the teacher...then weeks later your books would arrive! WOO! That was the best day of the school year for me. My mom would let me get as many as I wanted providing I promised to read them all, and I always did. I had so many books that I got to drag mine home in the same box the class order came in.

Down the sidewalk....*thump*...draaag...*thump*....draaag :wah:

Books were such an escape for me, such a friend to me. Still are.

You're right- your son deserves extra props (did I just say "props?") for taking it on himself and learning to focus. I hope he continues! :)

Oh no, you were ONE of those kids??? :wah::wah: I'm just kidding....I used to love the puzzle type books called highlights...remember those? The kids have book fairs now, but imo they are way overpriced....I would much rather go to the library and let my son check books out for free.

We just had a yard sale a few weeks ago and we were selling books for 10 cents a piece....we had totes full of childrens books and some adult books, but mostly kids stuff that I've bought for them over the years...people were loving the prices on the books for sure, not to mention the videos for 25 cents!!....My Mom priced stuff to get rid of it, and it worked....we probably got rid of more than half of the stuff we had to sell...and some of it was given away to...tbh.

Jeez WW3, thank you for a great post. Haven't been to the library in years and I'll probably have to activate my card too.

ha, the sad part was out of 3 of us, no-one was still in the system, the lady said that was actually weird, they don't usually take you out of the system for inactivity....but it only took a few minutes and a few drops of blood....just kidding....it only took a few minutes to get us all activated. I am looking forward to going there more often with the boys!

I will luck out in that department because when we first went there (my hubby & I weren't married at the time) and I had it under my maiden name. Now, I can put it under my married name and put all the kids on it.

Wendy, good going on your sale!

And yes, I was one of those kids. :D *hee* I do remember Highlights! Remember Goofus and Gallant? Goofus was always doing stupid stuff like walking into people's houses uninvited and eating food off other people's plates. This is becoming the "memory thread!" Did you have Sullivan books? With Ann, Sam, Spot and Puff the cat?

A library card is like an amazing ticket that let's you go to another place, met a new person, answer a question. Just for a little while, you get to leave your everday life and lose yourself in another. If more children would experience the joy of reading a good book, maybe they would use this form of escapism and "high"............not the others that are so harmful to them.

I was also one of those kids :o Used to love book club, could never afford to buy as many as I wanted tho (and I still have that problem) so YAY!!!! for libraries.

On a side note, don't know what it's like elsewhere, but at libraries here you don't have to be quiet anymore!!!! I was appalled! I'm standing in the library, there's kids running around yelling, people talking at the top of their lungs on the mobile so I asked the guy behind the counter, and yes, apparantly you don't have to be quiet anymore.

Ahhhh for the good old days when you could take the kids out the back & strap them for being too noisy :p

REALLY?? wow....I did notice people talking at regular tone, but nothing like you have described....Our library is old and small, it is chopped up in rooms, so I think that helps to keep the noise level to a minimum. I was impressed with the children hopping on the computer to look for books, I was too embarrassed to ask anyone to help me, and my son walked right up and asked, matter of fact before I even realized it, he had the book he was looking for in his hand!!

Yeah, I agree that kids need to be taken behind the wood-shed a bit more these days....respect for others is something of the past, or so it seems.

Boy I haven't been to our local library in a long time, compared to when I was younger when I would go at least once a week, how times have changed.

I remember it with fond memories though. I can still remember sitting in the same corner in the same chair (well the chair in the same spot anyway,) and spending hours reading all kinds of books whilst my parents would do the same, or sometimes visit the museum that is on the floor above. The staff there were great, and always kept an eye on us, and used to even give us the odd lollipop as we were always there.

That sure wouldn't happen today I bet, as the last time I went in the whole place, had been revamped with lots more computers to use, and I think even a loud section for people wanting to talk.
