Are we not the problem?

Post by RedGlitter »

From my email box:

This winter, more than 1,300 Yellowstone bison -- some of the last wild ones in America -- have been killed. This slaughter has already eliminated more than a quarter of Yellowstone’s wild bison, with federal and Montana state officials hazing and killing pregnant mothers, calves and males alike.

In Wyoming, at least ten gray wolves have already been killed since the Bush administration removed these animals from the endangered species list on March 28th. Our only chance to stop the slaughter of this majestic species is in court.

The day the federal "delisting" decision became official, Earthjustice served the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service with a mandatory notice of intent to sue. When that notice expires on April 28th, our attorneys will be free to hit the Service with a suit to challenge the delisting and bring a halt to the killing. And not a moment too soon.

With a population of only 1,500 in the northern Rockies, there are still not enough wolves to ensure the future survival of an animal that once numbered in the hundreds of thousands. Without federal protections, nearly 80% of the region's wolves could be killed -- a huge setback to years of hard work restoring these iconic creatures to their natural habitat.
