Adventures at the Battlefield

Post by WonderWendy3 »

Since I've been laid off in Feb., my dogs have been spoiled with getting a walk everyday and we had a really nice neighborhood for walking where I used to live. Well, that isn't the case at the new residence, we live on a main road that we would get run over within the first 5 minutes of a walk....so, I decided to pack the boys and dogs in the car and drive to the battlefield park that is about 5 miles down the road. We have them all over here, and most people do go to them to exercise and walk their dogs. My Dad used to take our dog to a battlefield when we first moved in here in 1985, other than going with him a few times, I haven't been to them at all.

Well, we had a blast!! We headed off onto a trail, not having a clue where it would lead us. My middle son was having a ball taking pictures with my cell phone to see if he could capture any "civil war orbs" :) The dogs were going crazy with their sniffers, well the lab/pit was, my shitzu was just so happy to be out walking!

We saw a deer run across the road and into a field and then it started raining on us, we didn't even care because we were all excited about seeing the deer, well then we realized we were kinda lost.....we went down another trail, and the boys went in the middle of a field while I stayed on the gravel road, where I saw a snake:eek: and of course I made the mistake by telling my boys, the youngest HAD to see it, He ran as fast as he could from the trail they were on to find it!!...I thought it was dead, but he kicked rocks at it and found out that ummm, no it was alive!! Luckily my son can run fast.....:o

As we walked further, we saw more deer there were 5 of them just standing in a field in a good distance, my middle son couldn't see them, he forgot his glasses and I felt bad for him, he will remember them for sure next time...

The walk was not only healthy and good bonding time for the boys and I, it was educational too. The boys enjoyed reading the plaques about what happened in the land that we stood on. Unfortunately today we were standing on "bloody angle"....many soldiers died where we stood and the boys found that sad yet facinating that they could be standing where Stonewall Jackson trod!:)

I have a bunch of pics on cell phone camera, I will see if I can post any at a later date to share :-6

That's pretty cool Wendy. I'm with your middle son- I'd be taking orb photos too! I hope he finds something in the pictures! You know, you had told us about the library, well I'll bet they have something on this very subject (battlefield, not orbs) and maybe your sons would think it cool to get a book on it and make the tie-in to the war and the field. I like to do that, so I just thought I'd suggest.

So glad you and everyone had a good time! Good to hear happy news! :)

That's great Wendy, you know as i do from living here in Virginia that one thing we have is a lot of Civil War history, i'm a Civil War buff myself and have been to most of the places here and it is amazing to stand there on the same ground on which so much history occured.

i'm glad y'all had a good time, except for the snake of course!:wah: what kind was it? i hate a snake with a passion but living on a farm i sometimes encounter quite a few!:wah:

Thanks for the suggestion, and that is a great idea. We actually stopped in at the library before going to the battlefield. My youngest had to turn in a book and get another one, he's read all of the Narnia series and now on to the Lord of the Rings.:-6

The kids really did enjoy it and I see it as a ritual in our future as long as I can do it, I will....(until I get a job) My youngest asked me as he was headed out the door this morning for school...."Are we going to the battlefield today if the weather gets nicer"? It was misty/rainy when he left for school, I assured him if the weather got nicer, we would definately go to the battlefield again!

It was a small snake, I have no clue what type, I honestly thought it was dead....it didn't move, and I left it alone, got away from it as soon as I could....I am terrified of spiders and snakes....yes, the song is about me!! :wah:

Hope....I agree 100%!!

Fuzzy one, that is one of the coolest pictures of orbs I've ever seen!! I told the boys about it, haven't had a chance to show them yet.

Well, we have been exploring 3 days in a row now on the same battlefield and the boys and dogs are just LOVING it, and my waist is waving bye bye to the fat-pants so I am a happy girl too!!:wah::wah:

The kids don't have school tomorrow, so we are off to another battlefield tomorrow to explore it...I am trying to decide which one to go to....but either one will be another fun adventure.

We were hiking or "exploring" as the kids call it for 2 hours tonight, we got lost in the woods and it started getting late, and of course I had to go to the little girls room:o...so we had to back-track in order to get back to where we started, we usually find it really fun when we go in a big circle!!:)

This is the battlefield website that we've been going to if anyone is interested:

This is one of the ones we might go to tomorrow, its just about 10 minutes away or so too.

I love visiting historical places, it's just so cool that that you live close enough to them to be able to do that!:-6
