Elementary School

Post by Pheasy »

I picked Minime up from Jnr-High on Friday (as he missed the bus AGAIN! :-5). So, he came with me to pick up my daughter from our elementary school (as she cannot travel by the bus). This time Minime came in to the school with me (he moved from this school to Jnr-High this school year). Wow I was a little surprised (although I shouldn't of been ... our elementary is excellent), he and many of his old teachers gave bug hugs (one was a little tearful), they really were pleased to see each other (nearly set me off :-1). Anyway, I can't help wondering why the Jnr-High/High schools have to change so much. The kids who left the elementary with Minime ,were such a great bunch of kids (they then merge with three other elementary). The teachers are so different :-5, the kids are treated differently. I watched them change with sadness. I know they are also maturing, but I just can't elp hthinking that if they had the same environment/treatment as in our elementary the change would be only have been positive one.

Anyhow, what is your experience/thoughts on this one.

PS. Hats off to our elementary school and it's faculty :-6

Yes, middle school, aka jr. high, is a big step for kids. I volunteer in my kids school library and see how young the 5th graders are and like to warn them that their behavior isn't gonna be laughed at like it is now. The teachers are far more serious because it's time for parents to stop holding their kids hands to first period, start taking notes, get organized and endure class all day without recess. It's a big change, but watching my 2 boys grow throughout middle school was a joy. The teachers still have fun with them, they just have to learn now when it is appropriate to kid around and when it's not.......just like in real life.

Both my boys have favorite teachers they remember, and you know what? It's their middle school teachers, not their elementary ones. These teachers are teaching them how to deal with life on life's terms, so they'll bond even more so, you'll see. Elementary teachers will always be special to some kids cuz they were their "caregivers" in addition to their teachers, that's why all the loving hugs.

Remember not to long ago they didn't go to Jr. High till after 6th grade. I don't care for the new 5th graders to Jr. High its to young they still need to be in Elementary School. Life is cruel enough I hope they go back to the old way on this one as they will find out it is 11 is to young for Jr. High. :-5

I guess each school or district is different. I wouldn't say my kids middle school is negative compared to elementary, just different.

When I was in school (this is where I show my age  ) we went to elementary till 6 grade, jr high was 7 - 9 and high school was 10 - 12. They were just opening the first middle school, which none of us had ever heard of.

Now it is K-5 elementary, 6 - 8 middle 9-12 high and they really keep the 6th graders seperate, their own hall, to slowly adjust them to the new life of lockers, abundance of homework and big kid life.
