Not sure this is the right forum, if not can a kind mod put it where it should be.
It is a fairly long post but please stay with it.
This month is "red Nose day"in the UK where loads of celebrities mainly comedians encourage all of us to donate to charity. this has raised £330 million in ten years. A large chunk of this money has gone to fight tyhe spread of aids in Africa.
Because the time is near the BBc showed a documentary on Sunday about this problem. The initial thoughts I had were one of supreme sadness and desolation watching young aids orphans trying to care for them selves, going hungy, fetching water etc, it was heart rending.
Then the interviewer asked the 11 matriachal figure of a family of three (brothers 7 and 5) what happened to your parents, her reply was, "I do not know, I know they died but not what killed them" Whaaaat! nobody told her. fast forward to another family, grandmother about 70, daughter 40 or so and several younger children including a 19 year old daughter and a 12 year old daughter. the mother has hiv, the programme showed the daughter coming back to live with her, very nice you would think she has come to take care of her mother and ease the burden on the youger children and the grandmother, sadly not the case, she has come back becasue she to has aids!!!!. the interviewer asked her how she got it, she said she did not know!!!, she knew her husband was hiv positive but he refused to use condoms and she went along with this, they continued to have sex without protection, he is now with another woman.
My point is, forget everything else but bloody educate these people, please.
the South African Prime minister Tsavo Umbeki has voiced publicly that he supports the view that Aids is not spread sexually but is a white conspiracy because only blacks get it. No No NO Tsavo, only blacks get it because you in collusion with the church refruse to educate them.
The rural areas of Kwazulu Natal and the Eastern Cape need hundreds if not thousands of educators armed with the most simple yet graphic material to explain how aids is caught and spread. The law we have here in the UK that exposes someone who knowingly infects another person to the full force of the law needs enforcing. If steps like this are not taken there is no hope.
Fugure vary but anywhre from 300 to a 1000 people will die today in Africa from a preventable disease.
