When one has a head cold why does one passage get plugged up for 24 hrs or so then clears while the other clogs for another 24 hrs or so ?

You know that when one is bunged up it's really, really hard to have a proper and satisfying sniff with that nostril, and sometimes it makes your brain hurt and your ears pop if you try ......... now just think how annoying it would be with both bunged up!

Be grateful that mother nature was feeling generous.
