The Oscars Worst Speeches

Post by jones jones »

Vanessa Redgrave gets political - 1978

Vanessa Redgrave fell foul of that old Hollywood Oscar speech problem - talking about politics. During her speech in 1978 she took the opportunity to voice her concerns over ’Zionist hoodlums’ to an unhappy audience of stars. The usual polite applause went out the window as Redgrave was booed off stage and branded an anti semite.

Cameron goes overboard - 1997

James Cameron could well be the father of the uncomfortable speech, having made us literally squirm in our seats with embarrassment as he collected his Oscar for Titanic. Cameron asked the audience to observe a minute’s silence for those who died when the Titanic sunk ’ah,’ we thought ’what a lovely chap, how thoughtful’. The minute’s silence came to the end and Cameron jumped in the air screaming ’I’m king of the world!’ ’what a pompous prat,’ we thought.

Gwynnie gets carried away - 1998

We’re sorry Gwyneth Paltrow, normally we think you’re alright but when it comes to the Oscars it’s just one faux pas after another. When collecting her award for Best Actress (for Shakespeare in Love) Gwynnie could barely get the words out but on she gushed ’to Ben Affleck SOB and my earthly guardian angel Mary Wigmore WAIIIIL my grandpa Buster WAAAAHHHH who almost made it here tonight SOB WAIL’. Gwynnie’s over the top speech had us cringing on her behalf.

Tom Hanks outs his teacher - 1993

Tom Hanks’ speech for his Best Actor Oscar (for Philadelphia) was quite a cringefest as it was - his gushing and God-Bless-Americas being enough to make us want to whack him. But little did we know that the high school drama teacher he referred to as one of ’the finest gay Americans’, Rawley Farnsworth, was also one of the most closeted gay Americans too and had just been outed to his friends and family on international TV. Kevin Kline’s film In and Out was based on the story behind Hanks’ speech.

Greer Garson goes on.and on.and on - 1943

When Greer Garson collected her gong for Mrs Miniver in 1943 it was already gone 1am and people were just about ready to go home, ’I’m practically unprepared!’ she announced as the audience breathed a sigh of relief and started gathering up their belongings. However, Garson then banged on for a massive seven minutes - one of the longest Oscar speeches in history - about the arbitrary nature of awards. Despite several fantastic performances in later films Garson never won another Oscar.
