ACROSS the globe teachers are struggling to keep dangerous weapons out of classrooms. But now a tiny Texas district has sparked outrage by allowing teachers to bring handguns to school.
The small community of Harrold will permit staff to carry concealed firearms, claiming it will help to protect teachers and pupils.
Next thing you know, the kids will carrying guns to defend themselves from the teachers....

Damn. I should be moving to Texas instead.

I'd prefer the kids to be licensed than the teachers, if it has to be just one group. There's more of them, they can react en masse wherever an incident occurs. I think it ought to be a general permission across all campus sites in the US for sixteens and over without criminal convictions to be obliged to carry firearms, nobody would attempt to shoot up a school or college in those circumstances.

I agree. I saw or was involved in many a schoolyard fight in the '40-'50's. Never once did I see someone pull a knife, even though near every boy and some of the girls carried a knife or pen knife. That was in the days before there were so many liberals teaching our kids to react in panic at the mere mention or sight of a knife, gun or fist.
And, these are rural Texas kids, unlike todays snotwads brought up on concrete, taught to fear everything. There, I had my say.

The verb is "allow" not "require." The teachers that apply to carry concealed weapons are carefully screened. Such an action isn't taken lightly. These are serious, cautious people willing to protect children in circumstances where they have no other protection at all.
They deserve accolades, not ridicule.

The teachers are carrying weapons because the kids already have them.

Do we? Wow. I must have completely missed the baby massacres on the news, I'll try and be more observant.
I can try and hand myself in for Grand Liberalism if you like, but I don't think it'll stand up in court somehow.:wah:

He's talking about Americans, Pinky. We're all communists over here by comparison to whatever they can muster over there which is fine, they have to live with the consequences. Somalia's got more history and more future.

Oh, I see! Actually, talking about Somalia, has anyone ever met a Somalian? I have when I lived in Malta and I'd be more than happy to go live with them. Back in a tick, I just have to re-blutack my giant Lenin poster to the front of the house again.
You're great, Spot!!!!

Just so you know, one of my sons was in Somalia when Clinton was pretending to be president. Every poor, starving, misunderstood, innocent Somalian had an AK or RPG. Anybody who didn't look like one of 'em was shot at. We were supposed to get permission to fire on 'em unless they fired first. My son saw a Somalian aim a pistol at a column of soldiers passing some buildings. He didn't wait for dirtbag to shoot. Son blew him away. Was gonna get busted but US troop moral was so bad, it was swept aside. That's what I know about Somalia.

A bit of history wouldn't go amiss here. Somalia was flooded with weaponry by the Americans in the first place when they tried destabilizing Ethiopia after the Ethiopian armed forces tried to eliminate corruption in the court of Haile Selassie and staged a nationalist coup which the Americans considered too socialist in outlook. That's where the weaponising of Somalia originated, that's why the place ended up with that beach invasion by television crews eager to see God's Marines storm ashore hoping to get Playgirl Centrefold billing from it.
What would Hoppy - or his son, for that matter - do if the US were patrolled by unwelcome uninvited troops from another continent? He'd be on the other end of the exchange presumably.
I drop in once a month for a meal at my nearby Somali cafe, I chat with the family who run it. They're a peaceable family, they spend some part of the year in their Somali village and some part back here running the business and cooking their local dishes. They're the people you're so dismissive about. Who's surprised that the US has gone permanently down the tubes with attitudes like these so widespread. It's a US-centric world you describe in which every other country's peopled by sub-humans with no culture or grace. It's not what's out there but the perception is the reason for all these bloody screw-ups.
And no, this post didn't trigger http://www.forumgarden.com/forums/showp ... stcount=49 before I get accused again of chasing people off, that was already there.

It's scarier to think that there are people who would walk onto a campus and start killing at random. I would imagine a person like that would rather pick a campus where firearms were banned than a campus where there might (emphasis added) be a teacher or two who can shoot back.
