Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD

Post by jones jones »

Anyone else ever suffer from this?

Seasonal affective disorder (SAD), also known as winter depression, is a mood disorder whose sufferers experience normal mental health throughout most of the year, but experience depressive symptoms in the winter or, less frequently, in the summer, repeatedly, year after year. As stated by the U.S. National Library of Medicine:

"Some people experience a serious mood change when the seasons change. They may sleep too much, have little energy, and crave sweets and starchy foods. They may also feel depressed. Though symptoms can be severe, they usually clear up."

The condition in the summer is often referred to as Reverse Seasonal Affective Disorder, and can also include heightened anxiety.

I think we do have to get used to the weather changes. In winter, we tend to stay closed up in our homes and the days seem much shorter.........thus the term "cabin fever". In summer, we have expectations of "fun in the sun", and when we have to work at jobs and don't get to have our expectation met, we can feel a little down.

It is really hard getting used to winter, it is a depessing time, its darker earlier at nights, that alone overpowers how you feel, and most days are cloudy or dumped on by 20C of snow, this also adds to feeling down for most, driving in it, shovelling.

Its cold, therefore we don't feel like going anywhere.

We tend to sit around much much more and that causes anxiety, depression, boredom and eating.

We tend to sleep more in the afternoons, that alone screws up our minds and bedtime curfews for work.............we sleep worse at night in the winter time.

I think it is because we are "locked up " so to speak.

More time to think & go over things in our mind.

More time to dwell on things.

In summer we are out & about & the sun doesn't go down here till 9pm /daylight saving ,cramming everything we can into the day. Getting into the garden, swimming, bbqing can't wait for it:-6

My mother gets it she hates the winter.

My next door neighbour also gets it she now has a special white light she sits in front of which helps a bit but as she puts it 'by the time Christmas comes and everyone is celebrating, its not the turkey I want to slice its my wrists'

I don't suffer with it. I make sure my house is cosy and cheerful in the winter I enjoy cooking winter food and I love walking on crisp cold days. For me the summer is the worst the light hurts my eyes, the sun make me sick and I burn in minutes. I cant sleep as well because I'm hot and sweaty , I cant walk the dogs too far if its hot a because I cant stay outside and b they cant either.

Best time for me is spring and autumn (fall)

Lack of sun to what the human body is accustomed to ......like going stir crazy but the lack of vitamin D (I think) has a alot to do with it . You'll find it's a condition that is more prevalent in the northern European countries.

and Canada for sure!

I always thought my ex had it....he was a BEAR in the winter....he fought the cabin fever by making us all go outside for hours in the snow, when all I wanted to do was stay in and stay safe. I wasn't depressed or anything, just liked being warm and cozy....

I don't like winter that much tbh....but where I live, it isn't half as bad as other places in the country much less the world...so I'll stop my whining!:D

fuzzy butt;957608 wrote: Absolutely . i was looking into studies of it and it seems to happen in the most northern countries and most southern countries. Canada would definately be one of those. I realise it probably sounds weird for australia but if you have a globe it does make a lot of sense when you read about it.

:)

It doesn't sound weird at all for Australia, you still have a severe weather change and some parts do have snow I here, so yes, tis normal!
