I'll bet most "pregnant women" think it's good & necessary! They have them here in NE as well. I'll never park in those spaces, as well as never in a Handycapped space! Thankfully, I don't need to park there! (currently)

In England in some Supermarkets they have parking near the store for people with children.I think this should be for the elderly who are not registerd disabled but never the less have problems...also what about people who have just come out of the hospital and having trouble getting about ...maybe due to a major op....sorry but in my mind these people need consideration.

Hi Odie,
Yes, I do like that pregger women, especially ones with small kidlets have these spaces available for them.
I always feel sorry for these women that have to shlep everything from the store to their cars. I usually end up helping them load up their car while they take care of the wee ones.
It's a nice thought to do something for anyone who needs a little bit of help. What's the harm eh:-6

I am with you Cars no handicap parking for me,I would rather walk the extra then take someones space thats needed .
Carol has a good idea for the aged as well, should leave all the close spaces for those that really need it.

There are so many that need these spots, even if you don't have a disabled sticker...........some cannot walk a fair distance for several reasons.........the elderly for a good example.........guess I just think they should stick in a couple for them.
I well remember the days when I was pregnant and it was slippery out or snowing...........you feared for you life and your baby's and I had good boots, .............but I also did not go out those days.
Guess its just me who was shocked to see them............don't get me wrong.................but I think it would have also valued much more others.
to me, they could have stuck in 2 more for people who cannot walk.
I know, then there would be dozens...................

Bad idea.
Treats pregnancy as a special handicap. Disabled people don't choose to be disabled. Pregnant women generally do.
Why do they deserve special treatment? If they can't handle being pregnant/having small kids at foot then they shouldn't have them.
What's next, spots for the morbidly obese because they can't walk far?

I cant get the picture of a sillouette depicting an elderly person with a walking stick painted on the ground at the supermarket car park.
My mum would be horrified.

I think one or two parking spots for pregnant women is a good idea. In Aussie in summer its exremely hard doing your shopping then having to lug your shopping to the car when your in your latter pregnancy. I pay my taxes, I worked right up till my 8 month. I know I chose to be pregnant but so what

And on top of being pg in the summer months, there is water retention which I suffered from with #2.

They can also be good for women with difficult pregnancies that don't have help. I worked up to the day before my youngest was born, and did a complete tune-up on my moms car. I'm sure it looked funny with me having to lift my belly to get under the hood. :wah:

We have the handicap spaces here, from which I do believe most of the elderly who wish not to walk for miles before entering public places are very much encouraged to receive the right to them...
But in retrospect I completely agree with you...

Family parking/ pregnant women spaces ect, not a bad idea not just because they may not be able to walk far but these spaces are generally a bit wider than the normal spaces and you really do need that extra space when trying to get a toddler in or out of a car seat or when trying to squeeze into the car with your belly.
I know I was a very fit expectant mum walking and even doing aerobics until 7 mths but Ryan was so big I lost sight of my feet at 6 mths and fell twice because I couldn't see the kerb, extra space to get in and out the car would have been a blessing.

You shouldn't have to worry about idiot drivers but sadly such is the case.

Sciatica is so very painful and again I think of the people who suffer with it.....unable to get a disabled badge but still never the less very hard to walk with......pregnant or not people with these problems should be thought about more but having no way of proving you have problems with walking other then a badge you can have real problems parking near a store and having walked in those shoes its such a pity something couldnt be sorted but alas it will never happen.

I think its a good idea but also agree with Carolly about the elderly or those recently out of the hospital should have the right to special front row parking as well. I know you can get a temporary parking Handicapped sticker in San Diego if you want one and they are easy to get but are only good for a certain amount of time.

We have them on the east coast as well. It's a PR ploy, makes people feel special.
At the same time, the plethora of disabled parking spaces are not necessary either. Let's face it if you are pulling up to a shopping mall and are going to browse for a few hours, why can't you make it to the front door from a regular parking space? The exception of course is people who are in a wheel chair and need special access and extra space, but I can't tell you how many times I have observed a person pulling into a disabled parking space and then get out of the car and walk to the store as well as anyone else. My sister has a disabled sticker on her car for her disabled son who is rarely in the car, but she parks in the disabled space anyway and thinks nothing of it. When I challenged her, she was insulted and made the point that she had the sticker..the absurdity of her action was not apparent to her and I suspect not to a lot of other people (and perhaps women who are a month pregnant and enjoy the perk). :-5:-5:-5

I can't worry about stuff like this...life is too short. What's the big deal about disabled people or people with issues getting these spaces? As far as abusers go......they'll get what's due to them one day.

The "police" can not be everywhere in every parking lot to catch the "offenders" of said spaces! Therefore, IMHO it seems like it would be a good idea if the "official holders" of handycapped badges, were given the legal authority to write a ticket to offenders that they found were wrongfully using the handycapped spaces that they themselves needed!
It would make the offenders think twice before parking in a handycapped space. By knowing that many more eyes would be watching!
