This is why circus elephants are a bad idea. You have to wonder why she wanted to break free. There have been some danged sad final stories of elephants in the last 100 years.
Jumbo 1885 died in a train wreck.
Topsy 1903 electrocuted with help from Thomas Edison.
Big Mary 1916 hanged and dropped while alive from a crane.
Black Diamond 1929 Attacked his trainer of 28 years, took 156 bullets to kill him, with him dying on the last one.
Tyke 1994 went rogue during a circus performance and rampaged through Honolulu, taking 86 shots to kill her.
One more that's stuck in my mind but I cannot remember the name....if I remember right it was in the early part of the century. Trainers shot and killed their rampaging elephant and upon autopsy they found she had two impacted molars, which would certainly make an elephant grumpy.
Those are just a few of the unlucky elephants.
And now Hilda.
Few things are sadder I think than to see an elephant dead on its side, wearing circus regalia. It seems such a mockery of its unnecessary death. :-1

That poor bear. I've seen elephants like that in zoos. They live on concrete or hard packed ground and they develop arthritis from standing or walking that hard surface all the time. I don't mind *too* much the zoos or rescue facilities that take in injured widlife that can't go back to the wild but even they usually need an overhaul in habitat.
But I do agree with you on zoos, Jimbo. I'd like to see them be retired. Of course then we'd have people say "but I want my grandkid to see a lion!!!" Then go to Africa.
