how do people get nicknames?
I have heard many different ways of people getting a nickname and was wondering, if anyone else wondered the same thing. My nickname is Willy, no not rude, just a derivitive of my surname. Does anyone have a strange way there nickname came up?

he would do that because he has tickets on himself. Mine was given to me during my time in the air force, when we joined we all had name tags with our surnames, and instead of calling me williams, i got willy, which gave way to wilbur and willyroo

I used get the full name when my mum would be cross with me ducks.
When I would come home on leave, and if I happened to get a phone call from a mate in the raaf, they would ask for Willy, mum would have this strange look on her face with a smile, and say to me, Willy there is a phone call for you, always had an idea who it would be then. I didnt have a nickname until I joined up, so I suppose it was a novelty for her to hear it.

My dad called me Tiger until he died. My brothers called me Quelk, none of us have any idea where that came from. They also used to call me shellybelly, which Jimbutt and Chezzwhiz have so thankfully brought back to be carried on and spread around here. :wah::wah:

I had nicknames for my mum and two favourite aunties, mum was the battleaxe, and my aunty nell was aunty nellie with the smelly belly, and aunty hilda was broomhilda
None of them gave them a second thought :sneaky:

I like to write and I thought of that saying: "The pen is mightier than the sword"
Then someone asked me if I threw pens at people, to which I replied, "Does a gunslinger throw guns at people??"

I was known as Clucky Clara when I was a small child as I talked a lot, then at school I was nicknamed Granny Smith ('cos I was slow getting to the blackboard one french lesson and some wag said hurry up Granny Smith) - that became just Gran and stuck until I left school........

That is so funny Neil....My nickname is also "Willy" and I've never told anyone on a forum this before..
When I was in my late teens I hung around with a bunch of lovely navy guys. We'd drive down to the Jersey shore and go swimming in the sea. I was the only girl in the groups who would be "fearless" enough to swim in the big waves....so the fellas called me "Ester Williams" after the great American swimmer/actress.
Since I wasn't old enought to go to the pubs I had phony ID and the boys shortened my name to "Willy" after Ester so they wouldn't say my real name. The name has stuck with me for all of my life. When I hear someone call me that, I know it's a childhood friend.

I know the feeling Kath, it has been the same for me since I returned to Melbourne, down here everyone calls me Neil, although a couple of blokes at work have started to call me Willy, because I wear an old air force cap with my nickname on the back :-6

Well I joined this forum using the name Nomad. Next thing I knew a lovely lady from England was calling me Gonad, then another chimed in with No-nad and so on.
