with 62% of the votes in, they are predicting a McCain victory here in Virginia.

It does, yes. It looks as though the old South still has a degree of intolerance to it, there's far less swing toward the Democrats in their totals so far than in the rest of the country. Maybe that's just because there's so few figures announced so far, perhaps it'll settle into a less Confederate pattern.

i'm actually suprised! from what i had been hearing around here, i was sure Obama was going to take Virginia! there was talk of Virginia going Democratic for the first time in 35 years!

Has anyone noticed Texas? It's staying Republican but my goodness, it's shifted a long way toward Senator Obama.

So has North Carolina.

If it's the case that the old South shows far less swing toward the Democrats in their totals than in the rest of the country, what alternative explanation would you offer?

Can I ask a question? I thought predictions were not allowed to start until polls closed across the country, they are still open in the West..........

there were some here that if they didn't like the candidate there party was running, rather than switch sides they said they weren't gonna vote at all!

so there may have been some voters who stayed home!

but the bigotry issue may have been a big cause of that!

they can predict a state after it's polls are closed but they don't predict the whole election until after all the polls have closed!

NBC news, MSNBC and CNN are projecting states that are won by each candidate, that is walking a fine line IMO, they should not predict anything until all polls close in the United States. I think the law says they cannot predict the final outcome, I am thinking a legal decision is in the making with this election.

Some say the debacle in Florida happened because one of the major anchors called it for Bush before the polls closed in the panhandle.

CNN has called some states for Obama, with less than 1% of the vote in.

Didn't work the last election to do that.

I am glad I will go to sleep in awhile and find out in the morning.

The problem is that US law has no influence over foreign broadcasters like the BBC, and with the Internet any American can see what the BBC is predicting. You'd need censorship to stop that.

The way to have avoided this race backlash would have been for the Republicans to have talked Colin Powell into running for president on their ticket instead of George Bush. The world would look a far different place now if they'd done that.

Some people really don't want to run, I think he is happier doing what he does now. But he would be a good candidate, everyone likes him.

I would love to Condoleezza Rice would run, I'd vote for her in an instant....she wouldn't get it tho cuz of her association with Bush.

Yep------------Obama did it in Virginia------When I left on the plane from Los Angeles Mc Cain was leading in Virginia. When I arrived in Sydney 15 hours later--------------Obama had won it. I am now settled down in NZ.

The Kiwis for the most part are elated that Obama has won.
