Gordon brown takes glenrothes

Post by Oscar Namechange »

This was to be the by-election that indicated weather Gordon Brown is able to win a General Election.

The Scottish National Party will be dissapointed with this result.

Labour did lose votes, but the predictions that this would prove to be Gordon Brown's un-doing, proved as deluded as the people who made them.

Well done to Gordon Brown.

That's rather pleasing. The government taking home a 6,737 majority at a by-election? I don't remember when a government by-election vote last held up that firmly.

Might I mention in passing that UKIP garnered 117 votes? Admittedly that's 117 more than they're worth but it's a heartening sign even so.

51% turn out. People are just fed up with politicians. I was beginning to think I might vote SNP myself but the trump fiasco has shown they are just as ready to bend the rules and are as corrupt as every other party. That constituency has returned a labour MP since the 1950's-it's standing joke that a monkey in a red suit would get elected.

and the tories lost their deposit. The UKIP voters probably put their cross in the wrong place.

I got the result late last night and i have yo say i was shocked. I did a little googling and read that even Labour thought they had lost by 800 votes, to their astonishment, they won convincingly.

I loved the story about Prescott flicking the 'V's' at the SNP. Hilarious!

On a serious note, and not to be smug over gmc, i think this does certainly show the country that people are ready to vote for Gordon Brown. Maybe Labour lost so much support, purely down to Blair and people have a little more faith now.

I don't know anymore. I have to say that i did think the SNP would fare better.

For the Torie's to lose their deposit, what does that tell Cameron?

I still haven't re-newed my Labour Party Membership nor signed up to any other Party as yet. I will NOT be voting Labour in my own constituancy because i want him out. He's been in for 19 years and does nothing. I have even told the junior Tory candidate that i will help him as i am oppossed to the 8,000 more houses they are building very close to me on greenbelt at Siston. (Spot will know where i mean).

I knew that our American friends would not respond to this thread as they won't know what we're talking about but a question for Spot and gmc? and don't laugh, I'm being serious.

Do you think this active role that Sarah Brown took in this election shows there may be a future Hilary to come? Is she going to get more active?

Tough titty gmc :p:p:p

I did notice. Wasn't sue whether it was intentional or not.

Most scots are ambivalent about independence. The SNP are a good club to beat labour with and remind them not to take anything for granted and the tories have got no chance. Depends what happens in the next few months. If Scottish banking jobs go south because of Lloyds TSB many will perhaps view it as GB and AB selling out perhaps to get at the SNP and wreck the case for independence. The turnout says more about what people think of politicians than anything else.

The turn-out surprised me too. I can't see it being that low for a general election can you?

I hope not. If the HBOS merger goes through and the scots start losing jobs you might see a major labour hate fest. There are a lot of jobs at stake in Fife.

I was reading on line about the threat to jobs up there if the merger goes through. I am not so sure if votors will see it as the governments fault or the greedy banks. I suppose only time will tell.

There were many many glum faces at the Rememberence Sunday services i was at today. To be expected of course but i think from a conversation i over-heard between local Tory Councillors, it was Glenrothes that had made them glum (or Glummer) :wah:

Does anyone want a gloss on by-elections for comparison?

The current session's had nine by-elections and the SNP, Conservatives and Liberal Democrats have each had one gain from Labour. Six were holds.

Since the war there have been 436 by-elections of which 90 were gains, slightly under a quarter.

They break down as follows:

SNP 9

PC 1

Dem Lab 1

Lib/LD 26

Lab 24

Con 29

They're from a slightly unsatisfactory spreadsheet I cobbled together a while ago.

Anyone want to hear about huge swings of long ago, or how the turnout these days is lots higher than in the forties and fifties?
