Problems are Popping up all over
I don't know what my beloved stepped into while exploring the internet, but something stuck to her shoe and now she can't get rid of it.
Every time she opens a window an ad pops up. I adjusted all the firewalls to maximum and turned on both the IE popup blocker and the firewall's popup blocker. Nothing works.
I even uninstalled IE and re-installed, but the damned computer saved all the old settings, so that did nothing.
Last effort - she's downloading Firefox to see if that will do the trick.
Any suggestions? :-3

It is probably a trojan or malware download this free very good program that should get rid of it. Run the updates to the program and then do a scan and delete any threats is finds. I use this all the time on PC's. They embed themselves in your registry and this program does a great job of getting rid of them.
If it the popup for "antivirus 2009" you should be able to uninstall it through your control panel add and remove program. But still download this software as it will pick up anything else that is on your machine.

Do you have a security program on your computer? Check the settings. Also you can check the settings on your internet options (right click your internet icon and choose "internet options"). If those dont work try using features from your ISP. Most have pop up blockers. Look under tools or options. The settings may have been inadvertently changed.
Make sure to do one of these in "administrator" mode. This info you can find out by going to control panel and choosing users. You have to open your computer in one of the "users" that says "administrator". If you use a user id that is "limited" then you will be denied some functions that would be available in "administrator" user. Hope this helps.

It IS antivirus 2009! At least that what usually pops up. What are ya, psychic?? :-2
I'd gone through the add & remove programs list and uninstalled anything we didn't want anymore, including a couple streaming video pgms that my beloved was reluctant to let go, but I didn't see antivirus 2009. I'll check again after work.
For both you & Wildhorses: I had Norton installed on it (free from provider, AT&T). I ran a complete scan & found nothing, so I took that out and downloaded Avast which I have on my laptop. That scan found three trojans but still didn't solve the problem.
Installing Firefox solved the popup probs until she opens her hotmail, messenger or IE. Any of those brings popups, but only through IE. I'll run back through your suggestions, WH, but I'm pretty sure I covered those bases.
Looks like I have one more weekend project. :p

you can go to the thingie that resets the computer back to a certain date, like set it back to the day before this started happening for instance and a lot of times that should take care it. It's worked for us. Now if I could just remember how you actually get to the resetting thingie....

Click on 'Start', click on 'help and Support', then click on 'Undo changes to your computer with System Restore'.
It's worth a try if all else fails but doesn't always work.

Well, if you are going to be playing this weekend anyways...
Don't need to join this site .. but very friendly folks, IMO
I've used stuff off this site a couple of times this past summer on employees personal machines and it seemed to clean them pretty well
I'd key in your specific critter in the search and they will have all sorts of ideas for you...

:wah: Boy I wish I were, I would be rich and retired. Save yourself a headache download the malware software I suggested and run the "Full Scan" it will take awhile but it will remove all the threats on you machine. This is a very good piece of software and "Antivirus 2009" is a nasty trojan that attaches itself quickly and many times on your system. Norton should stop it if you have your settings correct. Then again this is one smart trojan and you need a double punch to get rid of it. Restoring, cleaning, will not get rid of it, it has wrapped itself deep in your registry, and your systems msconfig startup. Believe me I know I have people begging me to dial onto their PC's and get this devil off their computers at home. Whatever you do don't mess with your registry. I have been doing this for years and I still get nervous when I'm in a machines registry.
Trust me the download will take care of your problem.
Floppy has also given you a site that is also good. If it doesn't take care of "Antivirus 2009" there is alway a re-format of your hard drive this is the last resort. Some Tech"s would say this should be done always. I try to at least give people options. If you haven't back up your machine to another source like a back up drive now is the time to do so.

It worked! :yh_dance Thanks so much, Carla. She didn't like Firefox so much anyway. Now she can go back to her comfort zone. Kinda irritating that the contantly-updating firewall didn't catch it, though. :yh_frustr

Excellent now just check for updates once a week and run the quick scan or full which ever you feel like. I don't recommend software unless I use it myself. I like nothing better then free software that actually works. Pretty simple wasn't it.

Awesome! The program cleans up most of the problems folks have brought to me too.. it's so easy to just run and follow along...
And it leaves you feeling you have really accomplished something, afterward...

ACC Firewalls and Antivirus software are only as good as they are setup to be. Home users in many cases aren't knowledgeable enough to know how to go through the settings to make sure they achieve the desired results.
If find Firewalls irritating also I don't have one on my PC at home. At work of course we have a "Firewalls".
If you want a good Antivirus that is free try these 1. AVAST free home edition, once again the safety is in the settings. 2. AVG Antivirus free edition. These are 2 very good free pieces of software. My take is why pay for it if you can get just as good if not better FREE.

She had Norton installed with automatic updates, but the setting was pretty low. I took it out after the trojan hit and installed Avast. Avast's scan also didn't catch it. I guess it was just newer than the latest updates. But malwarebytes hooked us up, so we're happy. :yh_bigsmi
