7.7 quake near Indonesia
JAKARTA, Indonesia - A local geological agency official says a powerful 7.7-magnitude earthquake has struck eastern Indonesia. A tsunami warning was immediately issued.
The official, Fauzi, said the underwater quake hit off Sulawesi island. He did not have any immediate reports about damage or injuries.
The U.S. Geological Survey said Monday the quake struck 13 miles (21 kilometers) beneath the sea and was centered 54 miles from Gorantalo, a coastal town on Sulawesi.

That is so frightening Chonsi......Those poor people who live in that area must be beside themselves. The only thing that we need to worry about in Noo Joisey is bad drivers and pollution:(

The scary bit is that some do so little damage while others are such killers, it seems unpredictable which is which. This one seems so far to be relatively safe.Overall, the population in this region resides in structures that are vulnerable to earthquake shaking, though some resistant structures exist. A magnitude 7.5 earthquake and tsunami 311 km Northeast of this one struck Indonesia on May 04, 2000 (UTC), with estimated population exposures of 11,000 at intensity VIII and 154,000 at intensity VII, resulting in an estimated 46 fatalities. Recent earthquakes in this area have caused tsunamis that may have contributed to losses.

I think the time has come for the world to put into place the underwater eqip that can detect techtonic plates shifing on sea beds and give warning. Just because a country is poor, does not mean they should have to live with the threat when weaalthier nations can take precautions.

Which countries can successfully achieve warnings? Warnings of what? Precautions against what? Nobody's ever given a successful prediction of an earthquake yet. They might actually manage it from satellite observations in the near future but it doesn't exist at the moment.

I will try to find a link as i'm sure i saw a documentary about the coast of America having equipment to detect the shifting of techtonic plates under the sea bed.
I just found this but will keep looking.

ABAG Bay Area Tsunami Hazard Info
You're firing in all directions.
How does "equipment to detect the shifting of techtonic plates under the sea bed" give warning or allow wealthier nations to take precautions? All it does is monitor the shifting of tectonic plates.
The Indonesians themselves already have a working tsunami warning system, as do the other countries which were hit by the Boxing Day wave. Britain, on the other hand, doesn't.

Yes i am. My knowledge of this is not very good i must admit.
Do you think a tsunami is possible in the UK??

I saw a documentry on this and it was quite convincing.

1607 Flood in Bristol Channel - A UK Tsunami?

If you look here, that purple patch is aimed directly up the English and Bristol Channels. There's another major fault on the Dominican Republic and a third in mid-Atlantic at the Azores - a major landslip earthquake there could put waves over my roof, and I'm 250 feet above sea level.

I remember the documentary. It was quite scarey. If it can happen once, then surely.......??
I'm glad your further down the road to me. When it hits, can you phone me and warn me it's coming. :wah:
Seriously, maybe it's just a matter of time and we need early warning in this country as well.

There are no precautions against earthquakes. There is the richtor scale, but that just tells you how big the quake WAS. And you dont get that info right away either. That is the eery thing about earthquakes. It comes on and you dont know how big it will get or how long it will be. You just dont know. Trust me...I have lived in the San Franciso Bay Area all my life. There is no warning at all. You know when you are in it. And until it stops you do not know what the severity will be.

It's not called the Richtor scale any more but I can't remember what the new name is now. Spot would know or i might be able to find it.
We get earthquakes here as well. Obviousley not on the massive scale you get them but small one's all the same.
I watched another documentry and i think it was saying that San Fran was due for the next mega tsunami. They had even planned escape routes. God, how frightening. I've been watching the fires out in L.A. as well on the news. Terrible for the people.. How frightening for everyone?
I found it. it's called the LM scale.. The Local Magnitude Scale.

The history and amount of drift says we are due for a big one a certain school of thought says the other says all of the little deep quakes we have release the tension slowly and we will never have one.
Take your pick.
I've seen a few documentary's on the possibility of a mega tsunami on San Fran.
Going by memory i believe one of them predicted a massive landslide into the sea off one of the Canarie Islands.

The Canary Islands are in the Atlantic, San Fransisco's in the Pacific, the only way for a tsunami to get from the one to the other would be for it to cross the Nevada Desert and climb the Rockies.
I had a look in my mailbox, there were five earthquakes the size of this week's over the last year.
