What's Fair Punishment?
What's Fair Punishment?
It sure varies from country to country. 7 years for Capital Murder is the norm here in New Zealand. Some countries would have anywhere from 10 years life or even the death penalty. Fraud and embezzleing could bring longer sentences than murder in some countries. Rape? Child molestation?
Somehow------7 years for a premeditated murder just does't seem to be adequate. What kind of penalties are imposed in your part of the world? Do you think they are adequate?

What's Fair Punishment?
maximum sentence here 25 fives years, but with parole.
far from what is good enough for them.

What's Fair Punishment?
I think it depends on the crime. A crime against a child. sexually or murder. the person should have to suffer as their little victim had to. We are way to soft. in the US. My late Uncle a dept Sherriff has told me. How stealing from a fast food eatery. would get more time. then someone would nearly killed someone. damageing the victim for life. MONEY is what counts here for your sentice :-5:-5:-5

Your answer's in your question Lon. If you want courts to punish then prison's obviously an inadequate punishment. Lashing is a start toward punishment. Walking a treadmill for twelve hours a day for a year is punishment. Public evisceration is a punishment. Imprisonment isn't a punishment at all, it's a costly attempt to change a person's behaviour.
For some reason the popular mind seems to have lost touch with that notion and we're left with nothing useful. There's no punishment even though some people hope that prisoners might get raped or killed or beaten up in jail. There's no significant effort toward changing a prisoner's behaviour because minimal resources are provided to achieve that. We'd do better to throw everyone convicted of any and every crime off a cliff, at least there would be a purpose to that.

Rape, assault with bodily injury, murder, anything with the intent to cause harm that does actually cause bodily harm.

Lon it's not 7 years max..............it's 7 years min. and they don't call it 'capital murder' . That's not our system. You either murder or you don't murder. There is no difference between state and federal murder. There is also concurrent and consecutive life sentences. Or at "Her majestys pleasure" not many get this punishment. And it's usually used for kids or really really bad criminals. It means indefinate or until (in the case of children ) they are satisfied that the rehabilitation has worked. too soft on these monsters. So they had a bad childhood. or were abused. that is no excuse.

And yes it is an excuse to a point. Say (as we know has happened ) a young girl is chained to a bed for her entire childhood. do you think she can acquire and emotional and pychological view of the world as you and I have? Do you think she could cope as a normal well adjusted human being? No?
what about a child who is tied to a tree on a daily basis and beaten. the mother on drugs or with a serious mental illness the father always away? will that child be able to cope with normal human emotion and psychological reactions to the world?
society makes it's own monsters. 80% of serial killers in the world are born in the United States. should we blow up the states just in case you breed more of them? Cause like, doesn't that make you all monsters for bringing up these individuals who kill?
I'ts my opinion that these individuals never had it soft..........ever. Being insaine. is one thing. But this just happen here. 3 boys under 21. killed a Burger King manager. Because he told them. the dining room was closed. just shot his head off. A war vet. Father of 2. Should we say Poor boys, they had it ROUGH. They should pay the price. For taking that man away from his young children,:mad:

there's a renowned Psychatrist who has pretty much summed up the politics of crime in the southern States of America and the prevalence of crime and peoples attitudes toward it . Very strange but extremely interesting. I'll see if i can find it. So i guess they should let Charles Manson out too?? Once a monster always one

Shall I tell you what puzzles me? The USA is the last remaining Christian country on earth and yet it's where this idea that some people are irredeemable is strongest. The two notions are incompatible, Christianity says it's impossible for a person to be irredeemable. How do the two ideas co-exist so easily?

Yes, I grasped that already. Maybe you don't know an answer to my question but I'd be fascinated if someone had a try at answering it.
