The Good News

Post by QUINNSCOMMENTARY »

Let’s have fun, let’s peruse today’s newspaper and see what uplifting headlines we can find.

Israel pounded Gaza, the death toll reached 300. Oh wait, that was in response to the nearly 6,300 rockets fired into Israel by Hamas, but who is counting, the only thing that seems more prevalent than the rockets’ red glare are the number of peace deals and cease fires we have had over the last twenty years. Seems to me it’s time for Congress to consider a windfall profits tax on the rocket makers. We have no trouble with moratoriums on whale hunting and we can declare an endangered species easy enough, how about declaring ourselves and endangered species and put an international moratorium on the manufacture and distribution of all forms of arms? And you thought Wall Street was the problem. :o

There has been a 39% rise in reported murders of African-American teens since 2000 and 2001, most of the killings were black on black and even the experts don’t know why, but suspect it is because of the large influx into the African – American community of ex prison inmates. Duh, is the real issue why there are so many African-American ex inmates? Na, it is quite obvious that there is no correlation between the highest school dropout rates, highest unwed mother rates, highest proportion of homes without fathers, demeaning and violent rap music, the elevation in society of moron sports stars and degradation of really successful African Americans.

A suicide bomber asking help in moving his car killed 36 people in Pakistan. Hasn’t anyone heard of AAA? And how could there be that many people in northwestern Pakistan in the first place, I thought they were all massing on the border with India. :driving:

A roadside bomb killed a US soldier in Baghdad. The optimum word is “a.” :-1

The Black Sea region is expected to take wheat business from the US. Remember, the jobs go where they can be done most effectively and most efficiently, seems like that’s true of agricultural products as well.

A truck exploded as it passed a checkpoint in Kabul killing 14 children. :( No doubt these children posed a threat to the Islamic world, but to show you how shortsighted these nuts are they just killed off 14 potential recruits for new suicide bombers, com’on guys think ahead. If I were really cynical I might conclude the poor children were better off than if they lived in the Sudan.

And for good measure the generals in Guinea have been demoted by the coup leaders taking over from the former regime (who took over from the previous coup leaders who took over from…). I guess “demoted” in that part of the world is not a bad deal. In Saudi Arab in it would be decapitated or is that just for adultery?

Then we have the slaves in the Sudan, hundred perhaps thousands of them according to the paper. It appears that rape is the standard form of foreplay in the Sudan. Most amazing is they didn’t need us white folk to make such headway. No doubt this calls for a change in diplomacy or we simply legalize slavery and rape and the problem goes away. And you thought the Portuguese and English cornered the market 400 years ago. :-5

I left out another entire source of good news...Mexico. There more people have been tortured and killed in the last year than in the Iraq war and it's starting to spill into the US border states. But no matter, the situation still has to work its way to page one.

I think I can live with global warming.

That is why I rarely read the paper anymore. Murders, etc. Nothing ever good except the Sunday paper where I can read the Image section with cheery subjects like the latest restaurant review or who got married, etc.

I saw on the news while at the gym today the stuff on Mexico, lots of fighting on the streets of TJ between the drug cartels.

Well, what can you do about the news-you either read it/listen to it or not. I usually hear it once or twice aday, limited amount of time, then I retreat into the quiet of the household. I do not watch or listen to anymore TV than that, I grade papers, write lessons, post and spend time writing.

Unfortunately, the other day they had something on the news about a man who dressed up as Santa and killed his exwife & family and then did himself in. Poor Quin was very confused that "Santa" would do that. Had to explain that he was not the real Santa, etc. but just a mean man who dressed up as Santa. I think he understood it.

Yes, the world can be a grim place, and sometimes it can seem like its all spinning a bit out of control. Admittedly this does seem like one of those darker times, but its never that safe in any case. Also, we don't get to choose the times in which we live, just how we will live in them.

Its not all bad of course, I am sure that somewhere today, lots of people fell in love, (some were making love), babies were born, wrongs were righted, people forgave each other, and families were reunited. Its all human life isn't it?

Yeah, but good news just don't sell does it?

Funnily enough, in those old war newsreels, you tend to see a lot of good news about giving mr Hitler a bash on the nose, that's because when things actually get really bad and people are actually really scared for their futures, they no longer need to be kept ghoulishly entertained with shocking stories or suicide music to give them a sense of being alive in their safe little suburban disneylands, they want to hear good things to keep them going through real hard times for themselves. Something tells me that music and films and TV are going to get a lot more jolly and a lot less angsty and maudlin in the near future.

I usually don't read newspapers, but every so often, I like to sit and go through them. Today was the day I bought two of them andI just finished reading articles about all the things you quoted except for the Mexician killings. Either I missed that one or our papers were remiss in reporting on it. Thanks for keeping me on top of things.:D

I like this site:

You click on any country on the map and it gives you the news from that country. It is a great way of seeing what is going on outside the limited local news.

I'll be happy if my house on Cape Cod doesn't' suddenly become beachfront.
