The car hates me!

Post by Sheryl »

I'm a sub-contractor on a rural postal route. That means when the regular person on the route cannot do it, I'm called. I of course have to use the other person's vehicle for the job. And it's not one of postal vehicles, it's her personal vehicle.

I've been doing this now since October. Everytime I have to do the route the car decides to act up.

Today I hop out of the to put some mail in a mailbox, and when I go to get back in the vehicle I realize all the doors are locked. Not sure how this happened since the keys were in the ignition and the car was running, and it's one of those new models that are not supposed to lock.

So I'm standing on the side of the highway feeling my pockets for my cell phone. Then I realize I had taken it out my pocket and put it on the console due to constant butt dialing. So no phone, doors are locked and legally I cannot walk anywhere. The mail has to be with me at all times when in my possession.

Thankfully I see a friend, flag her down. We try calling the lady I sub for to see if there is a spare set of keys, she's not answering. So we call a locksmith. After spending 10 minutes of explaining where I'm at and what the vehicle was, he tells me it will be $70 and he'd be there in 20 to 30 minutes. Ok I then realize I do not have my checkbook, firebird had taken it since he has a dr's appointment this afternoon. And of course I don't have $70 in cash on me. My friend says she'll cover it, whew!

While waiting a another vehicle pulls up and asks if we need help. We explain the situation, and lucky me, he has a slimjim. He unlocks the car and I'm allowed to continue on my merry way.

:-5:-5 Starting to realize why postal workers are not always the friendliest folks. :D

The towns that do home delivery of mail have postal trucks. It's the houses in the country on rural routes that are done with personal vehicles.

But I am glad to say that I've mastered driving with my left foot and hand, while sitting in the passenger seat. :yh_rotfl

Sounds like Friday The 13th arrived a few days early for you.

I can't help but wonder what the passerby was doing with a slimjim in his possession.

You can buy them in the auto stores. My dh has one in his pick-up. But I'm thankful he had one, he saved me $70! :D

Really ???

I'm pretty sure you can't buy them here over the counter. Tow truck drivers use them, but I 've never seen them for sale.

Anybody around these parts who had one would be a pretty suspicious character, unless they had a legitimate professional reason to own it.

Ummm, I have one. :-3 Keep it in my purse just in case I lock myself out of my car. It does happen. I was Christmas shopping one December evening and after checking out, walked out to my car..a Horizon...opened the hatch, put my goodies in there and my purse as well, closed the hatch..purse still in there and then realized..no keys. :-5 Called the house and of course no one was home. I was in a state of total panic. I really didn't want to call a lock smith..expensive!!

After trying the house a number of times from the customer sevice desk, an employee asked me what the trouble was. I told him and he said, just a sec. He came back with a slimjim. Said he was a policeman and was just working a seasonal job at the place I was shopping. He proceded to unlock my door for me and then gave me the Slimjim. I handed him $10 for his trouble. Now this was like in 1979. I'm sure you can't purchase them anymore and the police won't even help you out either. All the new electronics in car doors these days. They are afraid they might mess something up and get sued. What a wonderful world we live in huh?

Ever had your dog lock you out of your car? I have. same car, Horizon. I was on my way to go somewhere..not sure where at the moment..but had my Schnauzer with me. Bouncy little girl. Stopped at the mail box to put in some mail, car still running..bouncy little girl, Heidi was her name, was so happy I was getting back in the car she plopped her paw on the lock button. So now my car is locked and still running, my house is locked and my keys, house key included, are in the car as well. :-5 I could only think of one way to get into my car and that was to get into the house somehow, and get the spare. Now, all my windows have the combination storm, screen type windows except for the garage window. Much to my joy, that window was unlocked and I was able to get into the house. I got the key, drove the car back into the garage and stayed there. That was enough excitement for one day for me.
