Political Cartoon: Racist or not?

Post by Kindle »

This cartoon appeared in today's New York Post. It shows two police officers standing over the body of a bullet-riddled chimp. One of the officers says to the other, "They'll have to find someone else to write the next stimulus bill."

The cartoon was playing off Monday's rampage by a pet chimpanzee in Conn., that left a woman severely mauled, and who was killed by police when it cornered them in a cruiser.

The Rev. Al Sharpton, a civil rights activist, said the cartoon was "troubling at best given the historic racist attacks of African-Americans as being synonymous with monkeys."

The newspaper is standing behind this cartoon. Post Editor-in-Chief Col Allan said: "The cartoon is a clear parody of a current news event, to wit the shooting of a violent chimpanzee in Connecticut. It broadly mocks Washington's efforts to revive the economy. Again, Al Sharpton reveals himself as nothing more than a publicity opportunist."

Some of the Post's readers are calling it racist and insensitive but Sam Stein, a columnist, wrote that "at its most benign, the cartoon suggests that the stimulus bill was so bad, monkeys may as well have written it. Most provocatively, it compares the president to a rabid chimp. Either way, the incorporation of violence and (on a darker level) race into politics is bound to be controversial."

What do you think? Would you consider this racist? Should the Post have printed it?

Racist? It could be seen so but I wouldn't take it that way.

Insensitive and in bad taste - very much so.

Racist? No but in my opinion it is making a mockery of idiots who keep chimps as pets not expecting them to grow to maturity and acting as they would in the wild. The cartoon is a sick joke at the expense of an animal taken into captivity against it's will then blown away when it didn't play ball. As some-one who has fought for animal rights, i find it sickening.

when I first read the cartoon I thought of baboons in Washington,

but i am not surprised that some attention grabbing person of color jumped on the band wagon /soapbox yelling loudly about it. Am I racist ? no, just not surprised.

With all due respect to all you right on non racists who think the time has arrived that such a cartoon should be accepted as non racist, you are kidding yourselves.

The point is not whether YOU or I think the cartoon is racist, or whether the cartoonist had intention to cause offence by being racially provocative, the point really is if any blacks find it racially offensive.

I am not black but I find it racially insensitive at least.

You have a point .

And if the man that is yelling about wasn't also a man that will jump up at the 'drop of a hat ' yelling the same words at all and everything ,every time I would probably be more attentive to his words and actions. some people have a strong resemblance to an old story about a wolf and a boy,,,,IMO

Just another political cartoonist trying to show how terribly witty and current he/she is.

I'm not impressed.

Surely it's designed to annoy the creationists by suggesting your politicians have evolved from apes rather than being god's gift to America?:sneaky:

Survivor, Texas Style

You may have to be a Southerner to truly relate to this one!!!!

A major network is planning a new "survivor" show. In response, the State of Texas is planning: "Survivor, Texas Style"

The contestants will start in El Paso, travel I-20 through Pecos, Odessa, Midland, Big Spring, Abilene, Ft.Worth & Dallas. They will, Then proceed down to Waco, Austin, on to San Antonio, up I-10 to Kerrville, Sonora, up to San Angelo, up to Lamesa, Lubbock, to Amarillo Over to Herford and back to El Paso .

Each will be driving a pink Volvo, with a bumper sticker that reads:

"I'm gay, I voted for Barak Obama and I'm here to confiscate your guns."

The first one to make it back to El Paso wins.
