Does anyone use them? Are they a good gadget to have? Can they support a microsoft word program on it?

A netbook (a portmanteau of Internet and notebook) is a class of laptop computer designed for wireless communication and access to the Internet.[1]
Primarily designed for web browsing and e-mailing, netbooks "rely heavily on the Internet for remote access to web-based applications"[2] and are targeted increasingly at cloud computing users who require a less powerful client computer.[3]. Netbooks typically run either Linux or Windows XP operating systems [2] rather than more resource-intensive operating systems like Windows Vista[4]. The devices range in size from below 5 inches[5] to over 13,[6], typically weigh 2 to 3 pounds (~1kg) and are often significantly cheaper than general purpose laptops.[2]
Netbooks represent a "greener" alternative to larger laptops due to "lower power demands, fewer toxic components, and a resource-efficient approach to computing" and some models have achieved EPEAT gold and silver ratings.[7]

They are primarily designed for internet use. They come with wireless and complete operating system Linux, Window XP home edition, etc. They have a small hard drive 80gig is the largest. With only 1gig of RAM which keeps the size down and the weight. The keyboards are small and take some getting use to. I don't see why your couldn't install office on it. It would take up space and slow the machine down a bit. I haven't used one so I don't know if it comes with a full compliment of ports for example USB etc. They are stripped down laptop in a small frame to keep them light. All software you would add to it you would pay for they don't come with any installed software except the operating system.
Me, I would by a regular size laptop and get more bells and whistles for just a little more money.

I wanted a small portable laptop for when I go down to do research. Taking the big laptop, a scanner, and loads of paper is a heavy load on trains and subways. I was thinking of the size-but than I would have to load a scanner program on it too. But that would be all I used that machine for.

Is your scanner USB?? make sure which ever Netbook you order that it can accommodate your scanner that would be the key for it ability to function as you want it to. Their size is amazing they just fit in your purse they are powerful enough for my needs but they are finding their nich for sure.

It's purely the size and weight that matters, buying one of those. They could charge twice the price and still be worth it to some people.
I used an Asus eee PC901 and it's a beautiful piece of kit. It's got enough muscle to run Microsoft Office painlessly, it won't run up-to-date graphics games but then, I don't run those either. One day they'll stretch the batteries to a full working day but four hours is usable. It weighs just over a pound and fits in the pocket of my Stockman's coat.

Oh, I looked at those, spot. They look very nice. Thank you for telling me they could run Microsoft Office, that is all I am concerned about.
They run about $300 here. A lighter notebook would run a $1,000-and I have a year old run that is the home computer now. It gets snitched alot by certain kids upstairs, and my school one is six years old, heavy, and I don't want to take it on my own outings.
