Spot's response.Something, eventually, has to succeed in strangling private domestic transport off Britain's roads. If it takes 71% taxation then so be it. If it takes 90% next year then GB has my entire support if he tries that too. I'm sick to the back teeth with not being able to move around my city any longer, the streets are treated as car parks instead of routes, public transport sits in queues. Get off my roads and stay off them. I want to walk, I want to use a bus, I want to cycle, I don't want your fumes or your noise or your clutter.

I'm with spot on this one - for climate change reasons. I think cars are now a luxury we cannot afford.

Yeah, bring back the 12th century transport system. Stop repairing the roads that'll slow us all down pretty fast. It isn't that there are not enough roads or too many cars it is the fact that people have no where to park that blocks the roads. Cars should be parked off the roads not on them but it has been government policy to limit parking spaces so as to discourage car use, a blatantly failed and stupid idea. Give people secure off street parking that they can use and the roads will be clear straight away........

When my street was built it had a mews at the back with a coach house and stables for the street's horses. Guess what they are now. Apartments.
Nobody parked anything outside on the street. Never.
Now it's got cars down both sides. The chances of getting a fire engine here are minimal.
You want the Downs converting to a car park? I bet you do too.
There's a simpler answer. Ban every private car from passing inside the outer ring road. Ever.
What's 12th century about taxis and a tenfold increase in bus use? I'm not suggesting commercial vehicles should be restricted in the slightest either. Just those damnable private cars that clog the city. Enough already. Give me back my roads.

So get rid of the apartments and bring back the off road parking, and thanks for the childhood memory of your neighborhood. And who do you think pays for your roads---the car owners. Roads have never been for pedestrians anyway even in Roman times. Stop being a Luddite, embrace the modern world and buy a car, enjoy the freedom to go where you want when you want with who you want. Do your shopping without lumping 20 bags onto a bus home and taking up three seats......

It must be years since I got onto a bus with shopping bags. If I want to carry shopping home I take a cab. It's convenient, it's a lot cheaper than running a car and it lets another hundred other people use it before I need it again.
You know perfectly well that the mews and coach house, even if they reverted to garaging, are completely inadequate to the task. There's simply insufficient room for all the stuff parked outside. Each house locally has, I'd say, an average of four adults and most of them have a car.
I don't want the roads for pedestrians, I want them emptied for commercial traffic and emergency vehicles and bikes. I want cars off the sidewalks so pedestrians can reclaim them, drivers only manage to park both sides by putting wheels up past the kerb. Cars have choked my city and I want it back, I want it usable again, I want it cleaned. The private car is the cockroach of the road.

Ever heard of climate change, largely due to CO2 emissions? Hmmm. An electric car might be ok. (Still wouldn't buy one out of consideration for other road users. Actually, sod other road users - I want a steamroller. Traffic? What traffic?:))

Apart from the fact your post has nothing to do with GB going back on his word, I would tend to agree with you.
However, there is no viable alternative at the moment.
I've tried carrying my work tools on public transport and it doesn't work. Now I've got a heart condition so carrying my tools is medically unviable. Taxis are too expensive.
Anyway, buses kick out a load of crap as well.
