If I think someone in the Garden is behaving extremely stupidly, am I allowed to say so?

E.g.: "I think that you are behaving extremely stupidly".

If not, what *am* I allowed to say?

Personally, rather than criticism on an open board, just pm them.

You can say anything you want as long as it's not insulting or rude, I'm not sure if we ever really decided if stupid was a term that qualified or not. hold on a second I'll go check the rules! :D

okay here's the rule.

No "Flaming": Please do not post any messages that harrass, insult, belittle, threaten or flame another member or guest.

now the question would be, would the person who was called stupid feel they were being insulted or belittled and if they did and reported the post, then we would have to act on it.

The thing is, though, I would not, putatively, be saying "You are stupid". I would be saying ""I think that you are behaving extremely stupidly".

As an aside, I have a great big problem with the rule you quote - it can be used, even in a quite unjustifiable manner, to attack almost anyone who posts almost any criticism of anyone else.

we basically leave it to the members, if they feel they have been insulted or belittled, they report it and we then look into it, if the person in question lets its slide, so to speak, then thats there choice.

I would anticipate that using the word stupid to describe someone's suggestion or idea or thought is quite legitimate on FG. A post can certainly contain stupidity or express stupid notions. They're all criticisms of a post's content, they're not in any sense descriptions of a poster. The distinction needs to be plainly made though, to avoid confusion.

Bloody stupid question, given the terms and conditions you signed up to.

For some reason criticizing someone's grammar or spelling is competely disallowed.

yep i think to say someone is behaving stupidly is a different thing to saying someone is actually stupid:D

why do you ask? and as odie said can you not just pm them instead?

also if you did pm them would that still be seen as flaming if the person reported you?

Why is it important to you to actually say it,, to state it pubicly i mean isntead of just thinking it, tutting, shaking your head and going off to find a thread where no one is being stupid:D

If not, what *am* I allowed to say? Have you ever read threads and posts between myself, gmc, Chookie and galbally? :wah: Positively and downright insulting. We get away with it because we respect each other and hold a tad of affection for each other. If you have that with fellow members, they have no need to feel insulted. We know it is just opposing views and critisism. Nothing is ever taken personally, well except for when a I called galbally a Leprechaun but then he did call me a Daily Mail reading Knob head. :wah:

thank you for clarifying that Spot.

yes saying a person post is stupid is not the same as calling the poster stupid, as long as its clear thats what you meant, I don't see a problem..........unless like i said before, the person reports it themselves.

OK, what did I do this time.................

Seriously though, telling someone that their behaviour is stupid is completely different from calling someone stupid, and if the person in question couldn't see that then perhaps they are................;)

Personally speaking .... if someone had a problem with something I said, I'd prefer them not to put it on the boards for all and sundry to rip to shreads.

A PM would be much more appreciated. :)

It's not always applicable. If someone's part-way through a discussion and something ridiculous is put forward in public it can scarcely be left there unchallenged.

Some of my best work came when a young punk in a Civic  ripped out from behind me, passed me on the shoulder then had to slam his brakes on to avoid smashing into a car.

We ended up at the red light nose to nose with both of our windows down. I calmly proceeded to explain to him that due to his young age his frontal lobe was still in the developmental stage and couldnt really be held accountable for his stupidity. He kinda just stared at me.

Then the light turned green.

It was a "10" moment for me.

All this reminds me of my husband and I. We have some pretty outrageous debates. When I'm being bitchy, he'll say, "Darling, you're behaving like a bitch, and that just isn't like you...." Yeah right. LOL.

And I'll say, "And you, my dear, are acting like an *******."

In the end, we didn't actually call each other a bad name, we called the behavior bad, and that's something you can get away with. I love it. :sneaky:
