Children behind bars: The young rapists, arsonists and knife thugs at Britain's forgotten jails | Mail Online
This high security unit is yards from my home.
I have only posted this thread to say what a fantastic job the staff of this unit do. They really do deserve the highest of praise. They are not just warders... they truelly care for the troubled kids that are sent here. The Government has closed so many of these units due to cost. I feel it's vital that Britains most troubled and violent Child offenders have these units kept open.
I do not expect posters to comment but it would be of interest if you do.

If they are as effective as suggested in the article, then they should be kept going. It would be tragic if costs closed these units down. The children would not have access to this kind of help.

The kids are clearly troubled to be carrying out murders and rapes at these ages and the other option would be prison where they would not get the kind of help they do here. I really hope there are no proposals to close ours or others simply due to cost. 'Jamie Bulger's' killers were successfully re-habilitaed to go to be able to lead normal lives and i feel that if these units are closed, there is no hope for these kids to become decent adults. We'd simply be returning them to a life of crime and prison.

I do agree with you Scrat but there is another way of looking at it. They are already responsible for the most horrific of crimes at very early ages. If they are not re-habilitated in these units and simply sent to prison, there is going to come a day when their sentence is up and they are released with every possibility that they will re-offend and claim more victems. Society has a right to keep it's citizens safe and i feel to close these units is madness. We would just be putting extremely violent kids back on the streets one day only in adult form to claim more victems. At least here, they have half a chance.

I'm not sure you can use the word " successful" in regards to Jamie Bulgers Killers' re-habilitation. That was a huge bodge job. New identities and an ongoing speculation as to just how re-habilitated , at least one of them, was.
They both were said to still have violent tendencies when released
The papers and internet are rife with rumours about them. One of which was quite startling when I read it but rumours all the same, so far. Because the Police cannot divulge the identities, the rumours may never be squashed or proved

Because the Police cannot divulge the identities, the rumours may never be squashed or proved Yes, I've seen the rumours also however, i suppose we can say that they were re-habilitated successfully enough to be released. As it says in the article, it's very difficult if these kids know nothing else but violence. Surely that comes down to the parents at the end of the day most times?

The fact that it was politically expedient to release them bares no relationship to whether they've been rehabilitated. I do agree, however, that we must make an effort to rehabilitate kids who's only start in life is beatings and violence.
