I have been this trying for ages. - when I save a file, how do I delete it?
the options provided are 'documents' which they are, it says to click 2X on that file and then right click.....when I right click, delete does not come up.

You want to delete a saved file?
I presume you know where it's stored on your PC. If so, just use Windows Explorer to find the file, right click on it and select delete. dunno about this double-clicking stuff. You do that to open the file.
Correct me if I haven't understood your question.

I don't think it was implemented in all versions of Word, as OM says, it's a function that belongs in Explorer, but in my work version (WORD 2003) you bring up and file action box (such as open file or save as) and right click once on the file you want to delete - the option is towards the bottom of the resultant list.

-when I open a file, there is a delete button when I right click, but I cannot press any other functions then.

Don't open the file. Put the curser over the file before you open it, then right click on the mouse, there should be an option to delete.

microsoft works......are my filings save on hard drives etc?
If you have Micro$oft Works that is a completely different animal - I have no idea if this feature works in Works.
Whenever you save a document it is places on one of the hard disks accessible to your computer. The easiest way to manage these documents is using Windows Explorer which is there to do just that.
Bring up an Explorer window (shortcut of window-E will do that) and navigate to My Documents. To delete any document you just select it and hit the delete key.

mikeinie has it right this is how I do it in any version of works or word. You don't need to open a file of any kind to delete it. Just find it on your hard drive right click ONCE on it find DELETE and do it.
