I was remembering, the other day, various 'good deeds' from other people.......

My pensioner mother, a few years ago, was driving her Mini Cooper (the original one!) along a busy dual carriageway, when she got a puncture. Fortunately she was approaching a layby, so she pulled carefully in and stopped to change the wheel. She retrieved the spare wheel from the back of the car, leant it against the side panel whilst she started to undo the wheelnuts of the punctured tyre. There was a sort of screech of brakes, and she looked up to see that another car had pulled up behind hers and four teenagers climbed out and walked towards her. She felt a little apprehensive, and as they got nearer one said " Hey Mrs. don't hurt yourself, we'll change the wheel for you!" My mum was pleasantly surprised and smiled and said thankyou to them. "You just sit in the car, love, it won't take a minute" and they proceeded to change the wheel of my mother's car. Job done in just a few minutes, and all nuts tightly replaced and secure. One of the lads said "Good job you didn't have to do that Mrs. cos we could hardly get those wheelnuts undone, let alone you trying it!" He cast his eye over my mother's car, and said " That's a fast bit of kit you've got there Mrs. and I notice you are even in the Institute of Advanced Motorists, like my Dad is !" my mum said "Thank you so much for helping me, you boys, and yes I think I would have been in a bit of bother with those wheelnuts ! They do put them on so tightly with those spider things don't they ?" then added, with a smile "I wanted a car that had a bit of oomph to it ! And I'm in the I.A.M. because I had never actually had to pass a driving test when I first got my licence back before the war, so I just wanted to reassure myself that I was a reasonable driver, and also to stop my husband trying to find fault with my driving !" They all laughed and the lads waved as they left my mum and went on their way.

Such a pleasant change from the 'yob' culture that is becoming more common-place, and hopeful that not all the youngsters are pillocks and mindless idiots.




Similar to my mother's Mini Cooper, except hers was white with a turquoise roof !

Yes they did go like a tiger unleashed ! I know because I drove it many times !

Then someone patted her hand and asked 'are you ok'? she managed to tell them what was wrong and the young man went and got some cola while his GF stayed with my daughter. They fed her the cola through a straw and stayed with her until she felt able to walk. They offered to get her a cab or call someone for her they were brilliant.

I remember, when I was 'going out' with my now husband, many years ago. We met each other for a lunchtime break at work. As we came out of the nearby pub, we saw a man had collapsed on the pavement across the other side of this busy main road. Several people had glanced at him, and I heard one say 'He's bloody drunk!' but nobody went to actually check the guy out. We crossed the road to make sure the guy was not just ill. I knew about diabetic comas (my dad was a chemist!), and although I smelt beer on his breath, I was not sure that he was drunk. As luck would have it, an ambulance was travelling along the road, so we flagged him down and he pulled across to us. We explained our concern to the paramedic, who agreed that it could be a diabetic coma and got him in the ambulance to whip him off to hospital. A few days later, we called in to that pub at lunchtime and asked the landlord if he knew what had happened to the chap who had collapsed a few days ago. Apparently, the chap was a regular at that pub, and they kept diabetic beer specially for him, and yes he had gone into a coma, and yes he was fine now. The Landlord told us he would tell the chap next time he came in that we had been thanked for calling the ambulance - the landlord said he thought we may have saved the chaps life !

Makes you feel warm and cosy inside LOL. Since then, I have always been like that, just wanting to make sure if somebody appeared to be ill, that they were in fact OK. Doesn't hurt to check !

My son says your buddy must be mad ! :yh_rotfl He thinks it is horrifying that he should even think of doing something like that ! :-5 :yh_rotfl They aren't even as good as the originals !!!

It's always good to hear good stories of youngsters. The newspapers always carry the horror stories because that's what sells the papers, but then we get into the mind set of believing everything we read about them and forgetting that we shouldn't tar them all with the same brush.

We've had a young man in our school for the last two weeks doing work experience. Apparently he used to attend our school and was a right tearaway, always in trouble, being rude and cheeky and backchatting the teachers. He's now 15 with one more year to go in secondary school before he goes onto college. He's now well-presented and sensible. He's planned his college courses and career and he wants to eventually become a teacher himself! I didn't know him before, so all I see is a very polite, well-mannered young man who would easily make a wonderful teacher; but teachers who knew him when he attended the school are amazed that such a scruffy young hooligan has turned his life around so spectacularly and instead of being in trouble with the police (as was expected) he's built a brilliant future for himself! Way to go Liam! :-6

It occurs to me that newspapers dedicate too much space to negative news stories over such as those written here. Generally, I only ever find good deeds written about in local papers if at all. But do these bad stories really sell papers. Most people I have seen that read newspapers seem to buy them out of habit and go straight to the sports pages.

I think that if newspapers reported more positive stories, it would probably engender a better mood in people and instead of promoting crime, they would be contributing to the creation of a more sociable society.

I read that there once was a newspaper that told only positive news stories, OM, but it folded (unintentional pun ) quite quickly. People only want to hear the scandalous, sensationalist stuff. I guess it's like watching a train crash. You don't want to but you can't seem to look away.

As I said in my previous post, most newspaper readers go straight to the sports pages. If the papers that report positive news didn't have sports pages, the public probably wouldn't buy them.

I get the impression that people don't want to read the stories beneath the news headlines because they're sick of reading about bad news all the time. It's depressing. It's the sports pages that sell newspapers in my opinion. I wonder if research actually asks this question since the public have virtually no choice between buying papers containing good news and papers with bad news.

On the other hand, when I used to commute to London regularly, most of the commuters bought papers that contained financial news. Financial pages carry good financial news as well as bad.

If papers carried good news instead of bad news, the overall psychological effect on people would boost their view of society even if they still bought the papers just for the sports or financial pages.

That is my opinion.
