USS New York

It was built with 24 tons of scrap steel from the World Trade Center .

It is the fifth in a new class of warship - designed for missions that include special operations against terrorists. It will carry a crew of 360 sailors and 700 combat-ready Marines to be delivered ashore by helicopters and assault craft.

Steel from the World Trade Center was melted down in a foundry in Amite , LA to cast the ship's bow section. When it was poured into the molds on Sept 9, 2003, 'those big rough steelworkers treated it with total reverence,' recalled Navy Capt. Kevin Wensing, who was there. 'It was a spiritual moment for everybody there.'

Junior Chavers, foundry operations manager, said that when the trade center steel first arrived, he touched it with his hand and the 'hair on my neck stood up.' 'It had a big meaning to it for all of us,' he said. 'They knocked us down. They can't keep us down.. We're going to be back.'

The ship's motto? 'Never Forget'

Please keep this going so everyone can see.

Dear Oscar:-4

Thank you so very much for posting this beautiful thread in honor of the tragedy at the World Trade Center.

I still cry at the memory of that horrible day. It's so painful to think of those innocent people dying due to terrorism. Your poor country has suffered a great deal due to terrorism:(

What a wonderful idea to build a beautiful ship made of scrap steel from the trade center...:-4

Thank you Oscar..you made my day posting this memory:-6

I can't quite actually get my head round this, I'm sorry but it seems an odd thing to do from my perspective.

Yet another pointless tool to dominate and project power with.

What a complete and utter waste of resources.

It's an open forum, I just stated that it seemed an odd thing to do. Yes build and dedicate a memorial, but a warship  where the intention is to go and kill again. I can't get my head around the mentality of it.

I don't see it that way... more that both of our countries are still fighting terrorism. It was terrorism that caused 9/11 so what better fitting tribute to fight future terrorism than the metal that was the victem of terrorism?

How on earth is a ship like that supposed to have any effect at all on terrorism? Go on, think of even a single possible scenario in which it might be used that way.

I'm afraid I'm with Betty on this. I'm not comfortable being seen as vengeful, and this ship definitely seems like the work of a vengeful people. I would have rather seen it put right back into a towering office building in exactly the same place as the original buildings. That would have been the best revenge, imo.

It reeks of 'an eye for an eye'.

I, as a British citizen do not hold your viewpoint and you are not singularly representative of the British viewpoint either!

I'm also with both of you....I have never supported the war in Iraq or Aphganistan...I do not support the steel going to a war ship...I have looked at this thread several times & then thought about it...I think they could have used the steel for more humane purposes instead of building a war ship which will be used for war. I guess I'm a pacifist...but I don't believe in war as it certainly doesn't solve anything.

Imagine how many defunct bridges or levees in this country that would have benefited from that steel? We have bridges falling apart & they go and build a warship. Does anybody remember the bridge that fell apart a 2 yrs ago and killed several peeps? I forget which state it was in...they still ahven't fixed it.

with 700 tactical marines on board emergancy reinforcments is one, coastal recon, and for us dreamers maybe those 700 will be the ones to finish it( we can hope)

it is all about perspective, it shows that something is being done( not all may agree) but many people will feel safer with one more ship "fighting for the cause"

i think they should have built a memorial, but i think of this ship as a functional memorial.

There's too much propaganda relies on that word for my liking. The US doesn't like something abroad, it's automatically terrorism. It's an Orwellian abuse of language.

for the most part i agree, the main point is the us has had terrible luck against "garilla tactics"( sorry for the spelling)or "terrorism",i dont understand why they use the words they do ( i find it anoying as well), however, without propaganda no war or action would get backing , all sides do it and have through out history, so the us does what they can just as the other side is doing what they can, the fact is in an action of any kind you cant kill someone you like, and the word terrorism brings an instant dislike within many people, the truth of it is the ship is to comfort the populace, and remind them of the hate that was made on that day. sorry if i offended anyone :-3:yh_doh:yh_peace
