Flies

Do you think it would work or is it a bunch of BS?

Augusta, Kan. -

Late last month, Lee and Judy Miller made a change at their downtown drive-up food business.

For the past few weeks, clear plastic bags filled with water and a few copper pennies have been hanging over the two walk-up service windows at Miller’s Five, Fourth & State. They are secured with duct tape and and push pins.

The sight of these water bags have caused many to ask “What are they for?

“Repelling flies, is the answer.

Judy received an e-mail from a friend telling her the bags were reducing flies at other outdoor food establishments around the country.

“Without these bags at the windows, there would be flies on the outside serving counter and everywhere, said Lee.Now, they are not.

The bag of water trick has been popular in the South for several years.

“It embarrasses my grandkids. I just tell ;em to call me a redneck. said Judy.

County shop customers suggested it would work better if more pennies were in the bags.

Judy upped the penny ante.

There are many theories on how the water bags work on flies, with or without pennies.

A woman in South Carolina gives this semi-scientific explanation. “A fly’s head is basically thousands of eyeballs, and when these eyeballs catch their own reflection blown way out of proportion by sunlight refracting through the water, the fly not only leaves, but in a hurry.
