Road rage

Post by in the know »

I was driving to work yesterday, minding my own business. It was rush hour and the traffic was pretty heavy.

I noticed a car driving quite fast behind me, and on catching up, he decided to drive unbelievably near to the boot. He was trying to overtake me and was clearly getting annoyed as he could,nt find a good enough space to do so.

He kept driving like this for about 2 miles, and I was getting pretty peeved by this time. On nearing traffice lights which were red, I got out of my car and walked over to the car. I knocked on his window and signalled him to wind it down.

I then angrily said "Why dont you get in my boot? you have been trying for the past few minutes!" Looking embarrassed he apologised and said that he was in a rush for work. I said "So what, you need to get there in one piece dont you?"

I returned to my car and drove off.

Have you ever had road rage?

NO in the state it could get you killed or run over. :driving:

When I use to drive my 73 Camaro, or my 72 Cadillac Seville I would slam on the brakes and look in the rear view mirror to see the fear on their face when their tiny car was about to hit my solid steel car. Stopped them from tailgating behind me. :wah:

Yep last weekend I was about to turn left into the road to visit my mum and a car had stopped straggling the road. The driver had got out and was squaring up to a bloke with a Staff bull terrier. I sounded the horn but they took no notice. The young driver then ran to his boot and pulled out a pair of nunchuckas.

I jumped out and seperated the pair. Pushed the young feller towards his car and pushed the bloke with the dog away and told him to **** off. Turned again to the driver who was still giving it and swinging the 'chukkas about.

He got back into the car but the other blokes dog nipped me in the backside. :wah:

The thing that made me angry though was the fact that my wife got out of the car too "to help protect me" She's a tough little thing but that wasnt a good move. I told her that if it happened again she should get into the drivers side and not get out.

Silly, I know but sometimes we dont think and just react

From a legal point of view, how ever much the guy is tail-gating you, if it turns nasty, the One who has left their car and approached the driver will be the one to be arrested. What-ever he's done, he is still sitting in his seat. YOU are the agresser by parking up, getting out and going to his window.

Also, you never know why some-one is tail-gating you. Although most do tend to be tossers, there is the exception. Years ago, my husband had a very elderly man tail-gaiting and trying to dangerousley over-take him. When they came to a halt, the old boy said he's had the call from the nursing home and his wife had taken a turn for the worse and dying. My husband parked up his car and locked it and drove him there in our car.

The best defence in being tail-gated is to never take any chances and don't assume that they are an Idiot. Just pull over and let them pass safely.

You misunderstood me Oscar, alot of road rages I have been told about from friends, they slowed down or pulled over to the side to let them pass and were nudged up the rear end or had their wing mirrors smashed off...Intimidation and I suppose once they get themselves into that kind of rage, the thought of what damage they are doing to their car is insignificant.

Myself I would never get into any confrontation with an angry driver...

Hubs did a few months back, he pulled into a co-op carpark and let me out to run into the shop, kids were in the back seat. A car pulled up beside him and parked so close I wouldnt of been able to get back in the car, so hubs said something like, couldnt you park any closer and they had a little "chat"... When I come out the shop, he was parked in a different parking space, so I gets in the car and was just about to say, why are you parked here, when this car whizzed up close to the side of hubs again, wound his window down and said, I can take you anyday, hubs said oh yeah, come on then, I had no clue as to what had gone on but reminded them both that their was two young children in the back of the car who were petrified. Hubs nodded to me and said fair enough, put the car in reverse and as he went to move, the other car moved forward quickly and as its a small carpark, hubs had to stop quick, then the guy reversed again, waited for us to move and again he revved forward, so I told hubs to move forward in the hope that the plonker would drive off, luckily he did...Nightmare!!!!

As you can gather, he wouldnt of been bothered if we had bumped each other, it was on a private carpark so I think thats classed as bump for bump and you dont have to report it or go through an insurance company..

I no longer own a car and very rarely drive, but my answer to the tailgaters (after flashing the brake lights a few times) was to slow down more and more. They overtook on their way to dusty death and I never had a confrontation.

Have you ever had road rage?

Hi ITK....I'm not sure if you're involved with the police department, as I know that you're friends with LLB, but I honestly think that you were not acting carefully here. I really think that you put your life in jeopardy here and could have been seriously hurt.

I am a mild-manner person but often get really pi**ed when a driver tailgates me. 2 years ago I was so upset with a driver tailgating me, and I flipped them the bird....That was horrible of me to do, but I didn't deserve to be killed.

I've learned my lesson not to enrage anyone on the road now...my life is too precious to me and my family and friends.

This driver wanted to kill me.....I'm serious. I thought that I would have died that night.

Please be careful and don't get involved in road rage......pull over, let them go and live another day;)

Totally agree, that's the best solution I've ever found to tailgaiters - the closer they come to my exhaust pipe the slower I go.

I've had several drivers deliberately try to knock me off the motorbike - not recommended to settle the nerves but it sure keeps you alert.

Seriously, I'm hoping that you're kidding when you wrote that....I want you in my life forever:-4[/QUOTE] As in Mr O's road rage assault... the guy was Immediately arrestable because he was the one who got out of the car and approached our drivers window... that is an agressive act in the eyes of the law. Mr O was assaulted and the police wanted to arrest him on the spot but Mr O dropped the charges and shook his hand. If ITK's incident had turned nasty, she would be the one arrested, She parked up, got out and went to his window. A very stupid thing to do. If he had got nasty with her, she would still have been in the wrong what-ever he had done. Just let them pass. Sorry Bryn and Clod but slowing up just antagonises them all the more.

Road rage is just not worth It. As in any circumstances, you get Idiots.

My Father caused much road-rage in his days on account of him driving at 25 mph every-where. He'd say 'I've been driving for 60 years and never had an accident', We used to say 'Yes but you caused plenty'.

I appreciate your concern :-6 but I refuse to be pushed into going faster than I consider safe.

Tailgaters are trying to bully you into speeding up but the closer they come the less safe I feel the situation to be so the slower I go. Result is that they find somewhere to pass sooner than they would have done and I'm rid of them - they move on to hassle some other poor mut.

If I did as they wanted and speeded up then I'd be at greater risk through unsafe driving and any accident would be my fault for speeding.

Kathy - there 's a very big cultural difference here. Road rage happens everywhere - but in Australia, as in the UK - you can be almost certain the other driver is not carrying a gun, so the possibility of your being shot if things hot up is negligible. This just means that making a rude sign, or slowing down till they pass you is unlikely ever to be fatal.

You don't need a gun to hurt someone. The angry driver that I encountered tried to have me smash into his car...possibly killing me.

It's also easy to fatally hurt someone with your fists, tire iron, baseball bat, etc.

True enough, and that's happened here. Why do some people get this angry??????

Is it the pressures and frustrations of the way we all live these days? Our feelings of impotence in the face of a juggernaut. Are we all full of unfocussed rage??? Which suddenly erupts. I've caught myself losing it - over some trivial thing which was just the last straw.

I think that some drivers are mentally ill and shouldn't be driving.

All I know is, I don't mess with other drivers after my incident. I'm actually pertified that it might happen again. I do pull over as quickly as I can and let them pass me.

Some people are just angry and violent due to their circumstances I guess....maybe they made poor decisions and life was not good to them...:(

Unfortunately Apam there are some states here in the USA where there have been incidents where nut case drivers carry guns in their cars, some even have semi-automatics! You just never know when you might run across one of these nuts, that's until the shooting starts!

I sometimes watch US 'Caught on Camera' Live Highway patrol on Sky and it is frightening in America for the cops pulling over a traffic violation. I'm shocked at some of the footage and do really admire what the US cops face every day over there.

The really scarey one's seem to be when a cop pulls over a car on a standard traffic violation not knowing the guy inside is on parole and there's no way he's going back to jail, so he just shoots. Some of the high speed chases are frightening also. Man... you got some nutjobs over there :wah:

I thought of you this morning, Kathy, and of this thread. I had to go out early and not only was the traffic bumper to bumper, but all the parking places anywhere near where I needed to go had been taken over by builders.. the parks were mostly empty but blocked with witches hats and forbidding signs. Everyone was pookled off and one driver actually started cussing everyone. I got called a stupid woman - and it's only because of this thread that I didn't get out of my car and rip off his *********. Instead, I took a deep breath, smiled sweetly at him, changed my plans and drove on, elsewhere. You saved that bloke's future recreational possibilities, and you saved me from my baser instincts. Thankyou.. :sneaky:*

*... of course I now contain the seeds of pent up murder and mayhem type rage... and so I've come into FG to read all the political, religious, conspiracy and generally crazy threads that usually get so far up my nose that I breathe fire. On the basis that two lots of negatives make a positive. I expect to emerge then into the daylight, gentle as a lamb, pure as the driven snow and ready to shed sweetness and light as I tiptoe through the tulips of life.
